Wine from Baden

(397)

If homegrown Baden wine is served in the taverns and the joy of life goes hand in hand with pleasure, then the Song of the People of Baden is often sung. "The most beautiful country in Germany's Gau'n, that's my Badner Land". This is certainly true for the Burgundy grape varieties. However, Germany's southernmost and third largest growing region is also home to an almost infinite abundance of wine made from numerous grapes.

Sunbathed and full-bodied - Baden wine

The great variety of soils, the sunny climate and ultra-modern cellar technology are partly responsible for the best wines from Baden, but they rarely make the leap across the borders. The people of Baden are people of indulgence, and a crisp, full-bodied Baden wine is part of the meal.

So much the better that our contacts from Lake Constance to the Tauber Valley have sent us fine wines from Baden, which we are proud to offer you.

Baden wine

Baden wine is above all one thing: uncomplicated. This does not mean that the wine is of inferior quality - quite the contrary. However, instead of vinifying finesse-rich and complex wines, Baden quality wine shows its strengths quite directly. Long live simplicity!

Burgundy in Baden

Baden and Burgundy - two have found each other. With their full-bodied Pinot Noir red wines, the over 100 winegrowers' cooperatives produce exceptional products that are unparalleled in Germany. Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc vines also line the warm slopes between the Black Forest and the Rhine valley. Baden wine is almost exclusively dry vinified. Besides the Burgundy varieties, Müller-Thurgau has also found ideal conditions in Baden and occupies a large part of the vineyards.

The specialities from the south

The Markgräflerland region on the Swiss border, on the other hand, is known for its low-acidity Chasselas white wine, which is popular on all occasions.

Especially the growing regions Tuniberg and Kaiserstuhl convince with the Ruländer the taste buds of numerous wine fans. Known to most as Pinot Gris, this white wine benefits from the volcanic rock and loess soil, which gives it an incomparable freshness and minerality. And thanks to the concentrated warmth of the region, the fruit shows itself to be extremely intense in its straw-yellow body. Other Baden wine specialities are the Rotling, a rosé wine made from red and white grapes, and the Weißherbst, a pure, white-pressed rosé from a single vineyard. Both are tasty companions for sunny days, of which there are truly enough in Baden.

Other popular grape varieties from the Baden wine region:

  • Riesling
  • Gewürztraminer
  • Muscatel
  • Kerner
  • Auxerrois
  • Dornfelder
  • Lviv
  • Regent
  • Scrubber
  • Sauvignon blanc

The Baden wine regions

The Baden wine region is divided into 9 wine regions. From north to south these are:

Tauberfranken - wine from the Bocksbeutel

Tauberfranken, formerly known as Badisches Frankenland, is considered the northernmost growing region of Baden. Compared to the 8 other Baden regions, this wine-growing area is somewhat cooler, but still warmer than other wine regions in Germany. Thus, mainly Müller-Thurgau vines sunbathe on the southern slopes of the Tauber and mature into an elegant white wine.

Badische Bergstrasse - a Mediterranean excursion

West of the Tauber valley, the Badische Bergstrasse winds its way from Heppenheim to Wiesloch, south of Heidelberg. Here you can already feel the almost Mediterranean climate, which helps the Pinot Noir and Riesling vines to perfect maturity with countless hours of sunshine. The wines also acquire a multi-layered minerality, which is fed by the multi-faceted loess soils.

Kraichgau wine - the bouquet of cheerfulness

Right after Wiesloch begins the Kraichgau wine region, which henceforth extends to the Black Forest. Pinot Noir, Riesling and Auxerrois thrive on sandstone, shell limestone and loess soils, revealing a creamy, fruity and mineral pleasure - whether as a quality wine or simply a country wine for a refreshing spritzer.

Ortenau & Durbach wine

Further south, the vineyards of the Ortenau region dominate the lush green landscape. Of course, the omnipresent Pinot Noir can also be found here. The remaining areas are covered by Müller-Thurgau and Riesling. Ortenau is considered to be the southernmost growing area for the precious Riesling vine. Due to the great diversity of the soil, the wines are extremely mineral and lively.

The Ortenau wine region is also home to Durbach. The small community is considered by many to be the most Baden wine village of all. Not least thanks to the Riesling wines, which are pure in grape variety and score points with juicy aromas and a mineral nose.

Breisgau - dark forest and light drops

Even in the deepest regions of the Black Forest, vines spring from the nutrient-rich soil. Because high up on the hillside there are clearings where Pinot Gris, Müller-Thurgau and Pinot Noir are cultivated. From Oberschopfheim to Freiburg, Breisgau stretches along the slopes of the Black Forest, characterised by a mild climate and vast loess soil interspersed with shell limestone and red sandstone. This makes Breisgau wine very strong and aromatic - a true Black Forest Bur.

Kaiserstuhl wine & the Franz Keller winery

Wine and Baden go together in perfect harmony at the Kaiserstuhl. The Franz Keller Winery in particular knows how to deal with the geographical conditions and produces first-class white and red wines from Baden, from Müller-Thurgau to Gewürztraminer and Burgundy varieties. It is also remarkable that untypical grape varieties such as Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon thrive magnificently on the southern slopes of the Kaisterstuhl. The numerous hours of sunshine and fertile volcanic soils make this possible. It is therefore not very surprising that almost one third of all Baden wines are produced at the Kaiserstuhl.

Tuniberg - wine for and from the terrace

Excellent red, white and rosé wines are more the rule than an exception on Tuniberg. The elevation south of the Kaiserstuhl is characterized by terraces that surround almost the entire mountain, so that all the vines can enjoy the picturesque view, the limestone and closeness to nature. First and foremost it is the Pinot Noir, flanked by smaller areas of cultivation with Müller-Thurgau and Pinot Blanc as well as a few spots of Chardonnay, Muscatel and Sauvignon blanc.

Markgräflerland wine - must be a Chasselas

Down-to-earth and modest, but always honest to grape and nature - the Markgräflerland stands for craftsmanship, ideal conditions and chasselas. Located in the south of Baden, the growing area is dotted with picturesque wine villages and fertile ridges of hills, which are taken up by wine, fruit and forests. In addition to Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay, Chasselas also grows here - a light yellow, fruity and flowery delight that is suitable for a quarter or spritzer at any time of day.

Lake Constance wine - tastes of the fisherwoman

The lake is not only beautiful, it also brings an extra portion of sunshine to the vines on the shore slopes. The large water body stores heat during the day and releases it again at night. This means almost the same temperatures - day and night - and makes the natural conditions at Lake Constance something very special. This is exactly how Lake Constance wine tastes - particularly spicy, mineral and filigree. With Pinot Gris, Müller-Thurgau and Pinot Blanc, Lake Constance wine already offers a maximum of pleasure. But Pinot Noir enjoys a special status from Constance to Immenstaad - it was first planted here in Germany by Charles III in 884.
