Riesling and Grüner Veltliner from Kamptal

The sparkling white wines Riesling and Grüner Veltliner are the basis for the Kamptal DAC designation. Districtus Austriae Controllatus (DAC) refers to the origin of the wine growing region. In addition, only the fruity Grüner Veltliner and the fragrant Riesling from Kamptal may carry the abbreviation. On the one hand it designates the region and on the other hand it stands for quality wine. The two white wine varieties are largely responsible for the excellent reputation of the wine growing region. Besides them, of course, other white vines are carefully cultivated in Kamptal. Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc grow on the vineyards as well as Muscatel or Chardonnay.

Riesling 

The Riesling from Kamptal matures late. When harvested young, it is superficially light and acidic. But when the small, densely growing grapes with the black scars on the berry are harvested late, the Riesling is an incomparable white wine. The late onset of noble rot also enhances the quality of the Riesling. Its bouquet is special. Among other things it smells of fresh citrus fruits, apple and apricot. Flowery and elegant it remains long in the nose. It is no wonder that the Riesling has a demanding, critical berry with these outstanding criteria. On the terraces and vineyards of the Kamptal valley, however, it finds the terroir it needs to develop its strengths.

Grüner Veltliner

Grüner Veltliner is a very important grape variety for Austria. It is cultivated here in large quantities. Almost one third of the total area for vines in Austria is planted with this fruity white wine variety. The vines usually produce large, occasionally very large berries. Grüner Veltliner is extremely high-yielding and therefore requires precise control. As the grape grows and develops strongly, the quality of the taste decreases. The yellowish wine tastes refreshing between 5 and 7°C. The grape variety is one of the autochthonous in Austria.

The red wine Zweigelt from Kamptal

Zweigelt is the most cultivated red grape variety in Austria. Well-known synonyms for the grape with medium ripeness are Blauer Zweigelt and Rotburger. The Zweigelt is a new breeding by Professor Friedrich Zweigelt. The medium-sized grape with the round, blue-black grapes was bred in 1922. Its origins go back to the grape varieties St. Laurent and Blaufränkisch. The Zweigelt from Kamptal refreshes with a fruity bouquet. There are scents of raspberry, blackberry and blueberry. Often a strong cherry scent remains in the nose, which is surrounded by very fine pomegranate and orange aromas. The color of Zweigelt from Kamptal is cherry red. More often, however, the red wine shows a ruby red coloration in the glass, which is interspersed with violet highlights. The invigorating acidity of Zweigelt, which is sometimes pure grape variety, has a good length on the palate. The red grape variety is also suitable as a cuvée.
