Riesling taste of the country
The late-ripening Riesling grape hangs long on the vines to ripen completely. The warming autumn sun elicits a unique interplay of sweetness and acidity from the Riesling grape. The colour develops from a pale, almost white, yellow to a full golden yellow. Fruity aromas of apricot, peach, apple and rose combine with the mineral-rich soil. A unique and incomparable character emerges, which harmonizes with moderate alcohol content and an elegantly developed acidity.
The various possibilities to vinify and serve the Riesling hardly allow a generally valid statement about the specific Riesling taste. Just try yourself through the range of semi-dry white wine, dry white wine, sweet white wine, noble sweet white wine, dessert wine and even orange wine. Also practical to taste in our Riesling wine packages.
Spontaneous decision - the origin of Riesling
The Riesling is a spontaneous and natural blend of the grape varieties Heunisch, Traminer and the original wild vine. The Riesling was first mentioned in 1435 in a bill from Rüsselsheim, on the banks of the Main. It is likely, however, that Riesling spread from the Rhine Valley to growing areas all over Germany and had already been cultivated years before.
With about 50% of the worldwide Riesling cultivation area, Germany is the most important Riesling producer of all. There are other significant stocks in Austria in the Wachau and Alsace. Smaller areas also thrive in Australia, USA, New Zealand and Spain.
Riesling – the white wine grape worth waiting for
The Riesling is considered one of the most important white wine grapes, and hardly any other variety reflects its terroir with such persistence. Because it is a very slow-ripening grape variety, the Riesling is most successful when grown in cooler climates, especially in northern winegrowing regions, because it is able to complete its ripening phase in the warm, autumn sun. While it does demand a lot from climatic conditions, it is at least easy to please when it comes to soil – one of the Riesling’s many endearing qualities. Riesling grapevines grow in all of the German winegrowing regions. Today the vineyards that cultivate Riesling grapevines cover 21 700 hectares, which accounts for more than 20 % of the total area under vineyard cultivation in Germany.
Young, light Rieslings, whether dry or fruity-sweet, are ideal summer wines. Dry to medium-dry Riesling wines pair especially well with light dishes. Sweet late harvest wines go well with cream cheeses, and a fruity Riesling Spätlese is an excellent accompaniment to fruit-based desserts. If you are looking for a wine to please a group of people – your employees for example – Riesling wine is ideal. It is one of the few wines that appeals to almost every palate.
