Western Cape Wine

(236)

The Western Cape is not only the Cape of Good Hope, but also the Cape of Good Wines. The Western Cape Province and Wine Region is the southwestern tip of South Africa and is the only region in the world, apart from Antarctica, that can claim to be located on both the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. The majority of South African wines originate from here.

Wine growing region Western Cape

The Western Cape is the wine-growing region in South Africa, which produces not only the most, but also the best wines of the country. For more than 300 years, red and white wines have been grown here, many of which today have friends among wine connoisseurs worldwide.

Four large wine growing areas on the Western Cape

The Western Cape is divided into the four winegrowing regions Breede River Valley, Coastal Region, Olifants River and Little Karoo as well as some other districts and counties which are not assigned to any region. There are numerous renowned wineries around the towns of Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek, including De Toren, Rust en Vrede, Alto Wine Estate, Boekenhoutskloof, Neil Ellis, Paul Cluver, Vilafonté, Kanonkop, Fairview or Franschhoek Cellar, all of which we stock at VINELLO.

For all lovers of South African wines - and those who want to become wine lovers - the Western Cape is the heart and center of South African winegrowing. Here, particularly high-quality plants grow, from which the local winegrowers produce exquisite wines that are also highly regarded internationally.

Winemaking tradition in the Western Cape

The history of viticulture in the Western Cape dates back to 1655, when the first vines were planted in the province by Dutch settlers. Later, French Huguenots, who had to leave their homeland, brought their extensive knowledge and European vines into the country, which gave a great boost to the cultivation of the Western Cape and South Africa in general. As in many other parts of the world, the great phylloxera plague struck the Western Cape in the 19th century and brought viticulture to a virtual standstill. It was not until 1918 that things started to improve again, thanks to the initiative and energetic efforts of Charles Kohler. Kohler took care of the organization and regulation of viticulture. His regulations are still valid today, even though they have been extended in the meantime.

Due to the moderate maritime climate with a lot of warmth and sunshine, the land between the mountain ranges of the Cape Fold Mountains and the two oceans is perfectly suited for the production of noble wines. For wine tourists, who want to get to know the specific local conditions better, the existing wine tours are ideal. In the heartland of winegrowing in South Africa you will meet its beautiful landscapes, interesting cities and old mansions in typical Cape Dutch architectural style.
