Red wine dry Austria Wien (AT)

The Zahel Winery in the heart of Vienna

Location, location, location and the Viennese Gemischter Satz

The winery Zahel is located in the middle of Vienna's district 23 - a small place called Mauer in the southeast of the city. Only a few minutes to the city center and yet some vines of the family Zahel grow in the middle of the city - of course also in the suburbs and outskirts of the city. This is because Vienna is truly an exceptional area for viticulture - over 600 hectares cover the entire city.

Apart from the location, the winery Zahel remains true to certain Viennese traditions - namely the Wiener Gemischter Satz. This wine is vinified from 100% grape varieties from one vineyard. The prerequisite is that a total of 3 white wine varieties are planted colorfully mixed next to each other and these three are fermented together. The main wine must be only 50% and the third variety at least 10%.

In the vineyards of Zahel grow among others the following grape varieties:

  • Grüner Veltliner
  • Riesling
  • Chardonnay
  • Zweigelt
  • Blaufränkisch
  • Saint Laurent

Winemaker Richard Zahel with his nephew Alexander Zahel

The winemaker and his nephew

Richard Zahel does not work alone - at his side is his nephew Alexander Zahel - a fourth generation family winery. The two love the diversity of soils and microclimates in and around Vienna. The two winemakers enchant the senses with their Austrian wines and always work under the common motto:

"All of Vienna in one wine"
