Weingut Künstler - successful new start in a new homeland
The Künstler Winery was founded by Franz Künstler in Hochheim am Main in 1965, but the family's winegrowing history is much longer, as they had previously been expropriated and expelled from southern Moravia. The family's great experience offered him a good basis for the new foundation, so that the estate was soon successful at tastings and awards. In 1982, at the age of only 19, son Günter joins the family business with his first own wine and starts his oenology studies, which he successfully completes 6 years later and takes over the cellar of the family business.
In 1992 he finally took over the estate, and in '94 he joined the VDP (Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates). From then on, several milestones followed, such as the takeover of the Aschrott winery, the Burgeff sparkling wine cellar or new vineyards in Assmannshausen. The estate's first "Großes Gewächs" was also created in 2011. In 2016, the estate's ecological commitment, which has been ongoing since 1992, was highlighted in a high-profile manner with its membership of Fair'n'Green.
Viticulture facts
Both red and white grape varieties are grown on the Künstler estate:
Riesling
Chardonnay
Sauvignon Blanc
Grüner Veltliner
Alvarinho
Pinot Noir
Merlot
8 different sites with a total of approx. 23 hectares offer a high soil diversity for the different varieties. The vineyards are located in Hochheim, Kostheim, Rüdesheim and Assmannshausen. Rüdesheim is home to the Rottland hill, from which the first great Gewächs comes. The soils are characterized by slate, clay, quartzite, as well as lime and marl.
The philosophy in the cellar is not based on analytical values, but on perceived harmony, taste, and above all aging potential. The characteristics of each vineyard are taken into account and should be reflected in the wines. Nothing would be worse than a "smooth" wine. 20 employees are responsible for an annual volume of 350000 bottles.
Awarded with distinction - Weingut Künstler
Even today, the winery regularly receives awards for its high-quality wines. For example, the following awards can be found in the portfolio of the Künstler estate:
4 stars - Eichelmann
5 stars - Falstaff
5F - Feinschmecker
4 stars - Vinum
4 stars - Gault & Millau
