The Weingut Kiefer in Eichstetten am Kaiserstuhl, Baden, was founded in 1851 by Friedrich Kiefer. A native of the Markgräflerland region, Kiefer was himself a teacher and started something completely new with his enthusiasm and love for wine. 35 years later, his son Fritz Kiefer took over the winery and ran the business until 1930. The Baden-Weingut Kiefer subsequently always remained in family hands, but finally in 2008 no interested successor was found. But the Weingut Kiefer was lucky, because Martin Schmidt, who had already been working as a plant manager in Eichstetten since 2003, took over the winery with his wife Helen in 2008 and brought it to 15 hectares in the meantime. In addition, Schmidt can also draw on grapes from various contract winemakers for the Kiefer wines, which gives him a total of 92 additional hectares.
What makes Kiefer wines special
Today, Helen and Martin Kiefer primarily ensure that Kiefer wines are young, modern, varietal and honest.
"For us, wine is a profession, a hobby and a passion."
According to them, authentic and exciting wines are the goal of Kiefer. However, the Baden wines should not only be modern, but also reflect the soils and climate of the sites. That is why the loving care of the vineyards and the gentle, individual vinification of the wines are so particularly important. For example, the wine is gently bottled at Weingut Kiefer by avoiding unnecessary pumping processes and relying primarily on the helping hand of gravity in the wine cellar.
In the vineyard, too, Kiefer uses a great deal of manual labor to lay the foundation for high wine quality. This begins with fully ripe grapes harvested in vineyards with low yields and then gently pressed. This is the only way to ensure that the taste of the fully ripe grapes - with their wonderful interplay of aromas and fruit acids - can be found in the wines of Weingut Kiefer.
The portfolio of grape varieties at Weingut Kiefer ranges from regional kings to international classics and insider tips. Cultivated are with pine:
Pinot Noir
Riesling
Pinot Gris
Chardonnay
Sauvignon Blanc
Müller-Thurgau
Scheurebe
However, it is not only the wines from Kiefer that are strikingly good, the names also stick in your mind forever.
Bestseller from Weingut Kiefer
In recent years, Kiefer has developed wine brands that have become real bestsellers at VINELLO:
Mit den Wolken ziehen
Butterflies in the stomach or
Die Freude teilen
are just some of the names that Helen and Martin Schmidt have given to their cuvée of top Baden grape varieties.
Kiefer's bag-in-box wines are also extremely popular.
