The Karl Pfaffmann winery is located in Walsheim in the Southern Palatinate. The family has been working here for three generations on their vision of high-quality wine that clearly expresses its variety.
Markus Pfaffmann - Tradition since the Grandfather
The estate was founded by Karl Pfaffmann, the grandfather of the current winemaker Markus. Markus' parents, Sigrid and Helmut, developed the level of the Pfaffmann wines over 30 years, so that today they are a real quality wine estate. Markus, a viticultural engineer, brings the latest technology and winemaking skills to the company, ensuring a high level of innovation.
He is supported by his wife Marion, his sister Stefanie, who is responsible for the marketing of Pfaffmann's wines, as well as a longstanding and dedicated team, who lend a hand with the daily tasks. Even the parents do not exclude themselves yet and continue to get involved. In the meantime, the youngest generation is also playing a little fiddle in the company; you can find them mentioned by name on the labels of the winery's favorite cuvees.
The mountains and vines of the Pfaffmanns
The wines of the Pfaffmanns are diverse, and so are the grape varieties (more than twenty) that are grown on the estate. You can see an excerpt of them here:
Green Silvaner
Pinot Blanc
Pinot Gris
Riesling
Yellow Muscat
Sauvignon Blanc
Chardonnay
St. Laurent
Merlot
Dornfelder
The portfolio offers wines for everyday enjoyment, as well as top wines that should be given a lot of attention in order to enjoy them to the full.
Loess soils with chalky components in deeper layers offer the ideal nutrient-rich basis for the vines. The estate's vineyards are located in traditional sites such as Nußdorfer Kirchenstück, Knöringer Hohenrain, Gleisweiler Hölle or Böchinger Rosenkranz.
A total of 8 vineyards around the 4 villages belong to the Karl Pfaffmann winery. The locations of the individual grape varieties are always based on the exact microclimatic and soil conditions, a knowledge that the Pfaffmanns have acquired over their mountains through many years of work.
Sustainable work and quality at Pfaffmann
The vines at Pfaffmann Winery are pruned to produce large, full-bodied grapes. The yield is deliberately reduced in order to keep the quality high. This precise and conscious work cannot be done by a machine - so it is up to the winegrower himself to lend a hand in the vineyard.
Since 2015, the Karl Pfaffmann winery has been a certified member of Fair'n Green, an initiative for environmental protection, sustainability and social commitment in viticulture. In contrast to an exclusively agri-cultural certification, Fair'n Green covers the entire production and supply chain up to the customer in order to make the goals and measures of the winery objectively assessable.
