The winery Dr. Loosen has been family-owned for about 200 years. The vineyards on the Mosel boast historic Great Sites, which provide wonderful conditions for world-class, high-quality Rieslings.
Riesling at its best - Winery Dr. Loosen
in 1988, Ernst F. Loosen took over the family business. His goal is to create great wines that characteristically represent climate, soil and grape variety. in 1993, the Dr. Loosen w inery became a member of the VDP(Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates). In addition to the headquarters, wines are also produced at the Villa Wolf estate.
The expression of the sites and the associated climatic and geological conditions is the concern of Ernst Loosen. In his own words, when he"drinks a wine from our Erste Große Lage Wehlener Sonnenuhr, [...] he wants tosmell the blue slate that nourished the grapes and taste the fruit associated with this unique terroir. "
His ideas are so precise that he completely thinks through the wines he wants to make beforehand and has a clear vision in mind, in the spirit of the great winemakers he knows and appreciates himself.
The slopes of the Moselle
The steep slopes of the Moselle with southern exposure are virtually famous for their Riesling, which is produced here. Little shade cast by the slopes with resulting large areas of sunlight ensure deep warming of the soil, which releases this heat at night, providing the grapes with very balanced climatic conditions with little stress.
Slate with a high potassium content dominates the mountains of the Moselle, giving the Moselle Riesling its mineral character. The long growing seasons in combination with the heat balance ensure slow grape ripening, which also allow for the optimal acid character for this wine.
The estate's well-known sites include:
- Wehlener Sonnenuhr
- Ürziger Würzgarten
- Graacher Himmelreich
Discovery in the cellar
Ernst Loosen likes to age his high-quality wines in wood. The studies of the historian Karl Christoffel, who discovered that in Goethe's time it was quite common to age Riesling for a long time in barrels, as well as the enjoyment of a bottle of Ürziger Würzgarten from 1947, were decisive for this. He then experimented himself with such long aging, and exploited a 1981 wine until 2008. The result was so amazing that he continued tasting and ended up with the current figure of 24 months.
From estate wines to local wines to Große Lage, Dr. Loosen has something to offer everywhere. In addition to dry Riesling in various quality levels, they also offer residually sweet variants, the Réserve line with aging over 24 months in the Fuder and 6 sparkling wines. The wines of Dr. Loosen have already been rightly praised by the trade press and have also gained recognition beyond the borders of the connoisseur circles.
