White winedryGermanyFranconia (DE)Thüngersheim (DE)
The still quite young wineryBickel-Stumpf bears the name of Carmen Bickel and Reimund Stumpf. In 1976, the two master vintners got married and in the same year, they merged the parental estates from Thüngersheim and Frickenhausen am Main.
Weingut Bickel-Stumpf - two become one
With Thüngersheim north of Würzburg, and Frickenhausen south of the city, they combined two different terroirs in the new winery. The family Bickel-Stumpf worked and still works at two locations, an ambitious plan, but one that has worked out. Since 1980, the winery has been a member of the VDP. Until the beginning of 2021, Melanie and Matthias, the children of Carmen and Reimund, were in charge of the estate, since 2021, Matthias has been leading the winery.
Two places - two terroirs
"Mama's Vineyard" in Frickenhausen am Main has soils of shell limestone, which was washed up about 200 million years ago. Wine has been grown in this area since the 12th century. The wines from this site have a creamy melt in different expressions, but always present. The family Bickel-Stumpf owns a parcel here in the Erste Lage Kapellenberg, as well as in the Große Lage Mönchshof. The grape varieties

cultivated.
In contrast, the vines in Thüngersheim are on "Papa's vineyard" on Bundsandstein. Compared to Frickenhausen, wines from this area are clear and mineral. Silvaner, Riesling, Scheurebe thrive here, besides Domina, Blaufränkisch, Pinot Noir and Cabernet for the "Rot Hügel". Special sites here are the Erste Lage Johannisberg and the Große Lage Rothlauf.
The wines of Bickel-Stumpf
The Weingut Bickel-Stumpf uses different vinification methods depending on the wine. For example, the higher-quality white wines from Frickenheim are matured in oak barrels. The white wines from the individual terroirs are joined by the Crémant Francophile, a classic bottle-fermented sparkling wine from Frickenheim, the Rot Hügel from and the Quintessence, a noble sweet wine from Thüngersheim.
The terroirs are finally united in the estate wines, which are blended from grapes from both regions.
