From Villa Poggio Salvi one catches an almost kitschy view over the surrounding hills that characterize Tuscany so much. Here they make wines that are Tuscan through and through, but produced with modern technology.

The winery of Poggio Salvi

Winery Villa Poggio Salvi -  the land does well

Situated in a wine region that has enjoyed fame since the 16th century, people from southern Tuscany came here to recover or flee disease in the cities, the name Poggio Sal vi translates as "healthy Poggio".

Pierluigi Tagliabue acquired Villa Poggio Salvi in 1979 and completely restructured it. Today, the vineyards of Sangiovese Grosso thrive on 21 hectares of vines, on vineyards that extend from 300 - 500 meters above sea level. The soil, rich in clay, and the wind that blows over the vines from the Tyrrhenian Sea, provide optimal conditions for the grape that is produced here.

In addition to Sangiovese, other grape varieties are also grown:

  • Merlot
  • Vermentino
  • Muscadello

Villa Poggio Salvi and the architecture

Villa Poggio Salvi has a modern and unique winery, designed in 1990 by Enric Miralles. Miralles owns with Benedetta Tagliabue, Pierluigi's daughter, an architectural firm that has been responsible for projects such as the Scottish Parliament or the Spanish Expo pavilion. The building is in keeping with the land and blends seamlessly into the hills surrounding Villa Poggio Salvi

The goddess Pomona

Pomona as patroness of Villa Poggio Salvi

The company's logo is adorned by Pomona, the goddess of fertility, who is also known as the "Lady of Fruits". The logo was designed by Robilant Studios in Milan. In addition, the Pomona Italiana is one of the first collections of images and descriptions of fruits and fruit trees of Italy from the 19th century.

The portfolio of the house consists mainly of Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino. A Moscadello is also vinified. In addition to Villa Poggio Salvi, the estate Casavecchia is also part of the company and produces Chianti, as well as IGT wines under the name Poggio Salvi. The wines regularly win awards, for example Robert Parker awarded several with scores above 90 points.
