The Villa Huesgen rises majestically in the middle of the eponymous vineyard directly on the Moselle. It is located in the wine town of Traben-Trarbach, once one of the most important places for wine trade.
Villa Huesgen - Nine Generations of Winegrowing on the Mosel
1735 marks the beginning of the history of the Huesgens and their wine. In this year Johannes Huesgen I moved from the Lower Rhine to the Moselle and founded the wine trading house Huesgen. He began to cultivate wines on the Moselle and thus established the family tradition.
The following generations expanded the family business, always keeping in mind to remain cosmopolitan and at the same time connected to the homeland. The connection to the new railway in the middle of the 19th century by Adolph Huesgen IV or the introduction of modern cellar technology and progressive methods in viticulture by his son Adolph V, to whom the present villa also goes back.
The path to modernity
The women of the house also played a large part in the history, for example Maria Angelika continued the business at the end of the 18th century after the death of her husband, or Lotte Huesgen, whose husband did not return from the Second World War.
Today, Adolph Huesgen VIII runs the family business. Under his name the winery was renamed Villa Huesgen. Contacts to the international wine trade, a modern, elegant signature of the wines characterize the daily business under his leadership.
Riesling, the soul of the Mosel
The oldest wine-growing region in Germany, the Moselle, offers a temperate climate and soils of slate, which on the steep slopes along the banks provide ideal conditions for Riesling, which can ripen here for a very long time. Villa Huesgen 's sites on the river are:
Trabener Würzgarten
Enkirch Steffensberg
Enkircher Zeppwingert
These steep vineyards have a south-west orientation and the soil contains blue, black and grey Devonian slate. This slate is a perfect heat accumulator, which offers the Riesling a good temperature regulation and at the same time wonderfully expresses the mineral content. The vines on these slopes are up to 120 years old.
In the vineyards, the yield is limited in order to keep the quality high. The grapes are harvested manually in several stages to ensure that only the best, ripe grapes are available for the wines.
Art Nouveau next to modern viticulture
The cellar of Villa Huesgen is managed by cellar master Edgar Schneider and oenologist Markus Montano Lopez. Tanks with a capacity of 1400 hectoliters are available on an area of 300 square meters to bring the wine from the mountain into the bottle. Both stainless steel and wood are available for aging, from large barrels to barriques can be adapted to the wines to find the best for the desired result.
Since 2019, Villa Huesgen has also been certified by Fair and Green e.V. for sustainable viticulture. Today, the villa itself is also open to the public through wine tastings, where you can still experience the historic Art Nouveau style.
