Its territory stretches from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy, Spain, Romania, over Eastern Europe, the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Chile to South Africa.

As wide the territory of the noble grape variety, as numerous are its other names. In one thing, however, the terroirs are completely united. Pinot Noir wine is the undisputed king among wines. Try it for yourself and buy Pinot Noir online with us.

Full-bodied, velvety, slightly sweetish

The Spätburgunder taste is full-bodied and velvety. In addition, there is a fruity aroma as well as nuances of almonds. A typical Pinot Noir can be recognized by its slightly sweet aroma of cherry, blackberry, strawberry, plum or black currant. Mature Pinot Noirs can also have earthy notes, wines from the barrique also hints of vanilla and cinnamon. Traditionally not colour-intensive, mild, low in tannins and of a rather reddish colour, Pinot Noirs in a strong red, with more tannins, less acidity as well as short ageing in small oak barrels also correspond to the spirit of the times. Primarily developed as dry red wine , there are also semi-dry Pinot Noir and Pinot Noir rosé wines. In addition, the grape variety is suitable for the production of refreshing sparkling wine. In France, Pinot Noir is used as a blending partner for the production of Champagne .

Genealogy and a collection of names: from Pinot Noir to Pinot Noir

The genealogy of Pinot Noir has not yet been sufficiently explored. According to recent analyses, the red wine descends from a wild vine. Originally apparently only native to Burgrund, the Romans already cultivated it over 2000 years ago. Outside Burgundy, it can be found today in the Loire Valley, in Alsace, but also in Languedoc. In the Champagne region, it is also the best of the two authorised red wine varieties.

In this country, the variety was planted in the Rheingau from the 13th century onwards. Today it claims a vineyard area of around 12,000 hectares.

Like any older wine grown anywhere in the world, Pinot Noir has been given other names besides Pinot Noir. Meanwhile, 400 synonyms belong to this hodgepodge. Among them, Morillon Noir (old French name), Blauer Burgunder, Blauburgunder, Blauer Spätburgunder (Austria), Clävner, Clevner, Klävner, Klebrot, Klevner (Switzerland), Pignola (Italy) or Pinot Negro (Argentina) have become well-known.

Top quality from ambitious winegrowers

The king of wines is demanding. Its early ripening, thin-skinned berries are sensitive to excessively high temperatures, drought, wind and rot. They thrive best in a temperate climate, on calcareous soils interspersed with marl or clay. The Côte-d'Or provides perfect conditions for the Pinot Noir, which is why the best French red wine from the grape comes exactly from this region. Also the German red wine is pressed in top quality. Baden, the Ahr, the Rheingau and the Palatinate are the most important German cultivation areas of the Pinot Noir. Here, ambitious vintners dedicate themselves to the production of dense, extract-rich wines with barrique ageing. Especially products of the 2015 vintage make wine connoisseurs' hearts beat faster.

Pinot Noir wines: enjoyment on light or strong and fruity or sparkling

Pinot Noir red wines are drunk at a temperature of 16 to 18 °C. Quail, pigeon, hare and rabbit are fantastic combinations with lighter Pinot Noirs. Strong versions of the wine accompany meat dishes with game, duck or pheasant quite excellently. A short roasted fillet of beef also goes well with the Pinot Noir. Lighter Pinot Noirs have a shelf life of up to 2 years. Higher-quality wines can be stored in a cool, dry and dark place for up to 10 years. At a drinking temperature of 8 °C Pinot Noir Rosés taste excellent. Those who like it fruity should enjoy this wine within the first 2 years after harvest. Fullness and maturity await the wine lover after up to 5 years. Pinot Noir Rosés harmonize with starters and white meat. In Auslese quality they can even be served as an aperitif. The Pinot Noir sparkling wines are also suitable. Consumed at 7 °C, they offer a sparkling drinking pleasure. The delicate sparkling wine can be aged for up to 3 years if kept properly.
