Winery Tenuta J. Hofstätter - top wine estate from South Tyrol
The Tenuta J.Hofstätter winery is one of the most renowned family wineries and pioneers of site wines in South Tyrol. Joseph Hofstätter founded the winery in Tramin in 1907, and today it is successfully managed by Martin Foradori Hofstätter in the fourth generation. About 50 hectares of own vineyards on selected slopes and steep slopes, one of the largest family-run wineries in South Tyrol and the only one with vineyards in the west and in the east of the South Tyrolean lowlands to the southern Trentino, at an altitude of 250 to 850 meters, with different climatic zones and soils - and this is unique in the area - on both sides of the Adige River, with optimal growing conditions for the individual grape varieties.
Tenuta J.Hofstätter - Native grape varieties and terroir wines along the Adige Valley
We cultivate mainly traditional, autochthonous and local grape varieties, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir, Vernatsch, Lagrein. Years of experience with these grape varieties, time-honored and careful viticulture, the decision to use gentle pruning at a very early stage, modern and careful use of the best technology in the wine cellar guarantee a consistently high quality of the wines. Especially with Gewürztraminer and Pinot Noir, the winery J.Hofstätter owns the largest areas in the region.
With its wines, J.Hofstätter enjoys a high reputation and is also internationally one of the best known wineries in the region. In addition to the classic line of typical South Tyrolean grape varieties, the winery J.Hofstätter vinifies the line selections from selected grapes both as single varietal wines, as well as white and red cuvées. The top of the wine production are the site wines from historic vineyards of the region.
Vigna and Riserva - J.Hofstätter as a mastermind of site wines
Hofstätter has become the pioneer of single vineyard wines in South Tyrol through his principle of single vineyard wines, which, comparable to the "Cru" as top wines, show their origin from parcels classified as "Vigna". Wines from these single vineyard sites are terroir wines, with a unique character. Soils, climatic conditions, location in which the grapes grow become a delightful taste experience.
Location obliges. The vineyards are proven to be historical sites that were planted with suitable grape varieties at a very early stage, historical site and farm names are retained and the grapes, which are rigorously vinified separately, come from geographically precisely defined plots. Already since 1987, the winery has named the Barthenau Vigna S.Urbano Pinot Noir and the Pinot Blanc Barthenau Vigna S.Michele as Vigna in the label. The Kolbenhof Gewürztraminer is also included. The quantity of grapes from one plot is limited and so is the quantity of wine. Three of these excellent wines are vinified only in the very best wine years.
Winery Tenuta J.Hofstätter - 5 estates and a wine tower in Tramin
The J. Hofstätter winery owns several farms, including five historic manor houses, the Ansitzen typical of South Tyrol. The wines bear the names of the farms: Kolbenhof, Rechtenthaler Schlossleiten, Barthenau with Yngram, Steinraffler, Oberkerschbaum and Maso Michei. With the acquisition of Maso Michei in Southern Trentino, a remarkable altitude site, the family returns to the roots of its ancestors. The headquarters of the winery is located in the center of Tramin, here in 1997 Martin Foradori Hofstätter builds the new wine cellar as a wine tower in the air, right next to the church tower of the small town of Tramin, creating an interesting architectural contrast in the historic center. in 2013, innovative concrete barrels made their debut in the wine cellar, an absolute novelty in winemaking for South Tyrol. Due to their special aesthetics, they have even become one of the attractions of the winery. Here is also the wine bar, Enoteca and restaurant of the family J.Hofstätter, starting point for pleasurable moments, for visits to wine cellars and vineyards.
