The Vigna Steinraffler Lagrein South Tyrol DOC by J.Hofstätter shows a deep dark and garnet red colour with an almost black core in the glass. On the nose, it surprises with its complex bouquet of earthy, fruity and spicy aromas, which initially unfold delicately and then more and more concentrated and finally remind of dark, ripe plums, dense and at the same time almost rustic. On the palate, this complex and spicy aroma continues, with a powerful structure and well-integrated tannins. The finish is long, sustainable and shows a mineral component in the reverberation.
Vinification of Vigna Steinraffler Lagrein South Tyrol by J.Hofstätter
The Lagrein grape variety is a unique indigenous grape variety that grows only in South Tyrol and finds optimal conditions in the Steinraffler vineyards of the J. Hofstätter winery. The vines thrive on clay and gravel soils. After the manual harvest, the grapes are destemmed and then come into the fermentation tank, where the mash is fermented for about 10 days after a short maceration. The wine is then aged for 15 months in small oak barrels, then for a further 7 months in large oak barrels. After bottling, it matures for a further 12 months in the bottle store before being sold.
In the Steinraffler vineyards, J.Hofstätter planted the almost forgotten grape variety short-stalked Lagrein, refined it on weak-growing substrates and reared it. This revived an old, indigenous grape variety. Through the care of the old grape variety with modern educational methods, tradition and innovation were able to form a new connection.
