North of the city of Alghero in Sardinia lies the winery Sella & Mosca, one of the largest in Europe. Here beats the heart of Sardinia, with its unique nature and geology that give character to the wine that is produced here.
Winery Sella & Mosca - Sardinia presents
Sardinia is known for beautiful landscapes, sun and a Mediterranean climate. The small island in the Mediterranean Sea has therefore naturally just as outstanding conditions for the wine-growing, which was recognized also at the beginning of the last century by two discovery-joyful Piemontesern - of the engineer Sella and the lawyer Mosca. The two found a piece of pasture land here, which they transformed into excellent wine-growing land and founded the Sella & Mosca winery. Now - more than a century later, the very best wine is grown on 550 hectares of vineyards.
The regions of Sella & Mosca
The size of Sella & Mosca can be wonderfully represented in a number: 650 hectares of vineyards extend around the estate near Alghero and two other appellations: Gallura and Sulcis.
Characteristic of Alghero is the flat topology, calcareous, clayey and sandy soils with a high iron content. Cool sea air from the west gives the wine a unique character. 520 hectares of Sella & Mosca 's vineyards are located in this area, where the two most famous DOC wines of Sardinia come from:
Vermentino di Sardegna
Cannonau di Sardegna
In addition, the Alghero DOC wines also come from here, as well as some other lines of the company.
Contrastingly, the northeastern tip of Sardinia, with its granite on Mount Libara, offers the foundations for a very different wine, vinified in the form of Vermentino die Gallura.
In the extreme south of Sardinia one finds the third, comparatively very small parcel of Sella & Mosca, in the area of Giba in Sulcis. Nestled between the Iglesiente Mountains and Cape Teulada, this region is rich in minerals, which lie in sandy soils. Here thrives the Carignano, which was probably brought here long ago by the Phoenicians. The climate of the region favors a fast ripening, so that the harvest here takes place already at the beginning of October.
Sella & Mosca and the art
Sella & Mosca collaborated with Antonio Marras, a well-known Sardinian designer, to give their wines a special characteristic. Thus, four new wines were created, for which Marras designed labels. His style focuses on craftsmanship and Sardinia as inspiration. The wines were designed from the most representative grape varieties Sella & Moscas to capture the spirit of the brand: Torbato, Vermentino and Cannonau.
