The vineyards of the Selbach-Oster winery stretch along the banks of the Moselle in Zeltingen. For 400 years, the Selbach family has been putting its hand to the Riesling here, spreading over the steep slopes.
The Mosel Riesling from Selbach-Oster
3 generations are active at the same time, the grandmother Sigrid, the owners Barbara and Johannes Selbach, and their children Sebastian and Hannah. The Moselle is the oldest wine-growing region in Germany, so the Romans and Celts already cultivated the plant here. Selbach-Oster contributes to the reputation of Mosel Rieslings as among the best white wines in the world.
Small berries - great quality
The steep slopes with their high sun exposure in combination with the typical slate soils of the Mosel region give the wines of Selbach-Oster the unique character that wines from this area possess. The following grape varieties are grown on the estate:
Riesling with 98% of the vineyard area
Pinot Blanc
Gewürztraminer
Some of the vines are over 100 years old and thus produce only small berries, but they are very aromatic and intense. Thus, the yields of the winerySelbach-Oster remain quite low and the workload due to the steep slopes quite high, but this pays off with high quality products.
Vinification of the Selbach-Oster wines
The fermentation of the wines of Selbach-Oster takes place predominantly by naturally occurring yeasts. The fermentation is not rushed, but carried out slowly and cool, so that the wines remain fresh and can shine with their finesse. Aging traditionally takes place in oak barrels.
The fine wood notes that the wine picks up in the process give it a special quality that makes Moselle wines stand out from the crowd. The portfolio of Selbach-Oster ranges from dry Rieslings to noble sweet variants, from elegant and easy to drink to more complex wines.
Sustainability has always been a theme at Selbach-Oster due to the amount of manual labor and proximity to the vine, so it's no surprise that the family winery's vinotheque was also built with environmentally friendly materials. The winery's team may be a motley crew, but they are all committed to the goal of upholding Mosel Riesling, and they make sure that happens every day.
