The Schnaitmann winery is located in Fellbach, northeast of Stuttgart. The Schnaitmanns, as the family likes to call themselves, have been winemakers in Fellbach for 19 generations. Nevertheless, it would take until 1997 for the first wines to appear under their own label.
Weingut Schnaitmann - a brilliant start (almost) from nothing
Rainer Schnaitmann, the current owner, originally studied architecture, but a spirit of optimism in viticulture with experiments away from the familiar led him to take up an apprenticeship in the Remstal after all, as well as working in South Tyrol and even New Zealand to gain different experiences. 3 hectares of vineyard, which he leased from his father, were his starting point into his own winemaking life.
Ups and downs of Schnaitmann
Already with the first vintage Schnaitmann succeeded in the admission in the Gault Millau. Additional vineyards were acquired to further expand the success. But in 2000 hail destroyed the entire vineyards of Fellbach and thus the work of the year. But Rainer Schnaitmann did not let it get him down, and so he looked for a replacement in the Rems Valley, which he knew.
The second winemaking mainstay of the family Schnaitmann stems from this time. in 2006, the VDP accepted Schnaitmann as the youngest winery in the association. Further vineyards in the Zabergäu were acquired, so that the total vineyard area today amounts to 26 hectares.
Schnaitmann's sites in diversity
The main site in Fellbach benefits from the warm climate on the edge of the Stuttgart valley basin, so that one of the best Sauvignon Blancs from Schnaitmann is produced on the Fellbacher Goldberg. Other sites include Fellbacher Lämmler with Riesling and Burgundy, and on Schnaiter Altenberg, which is much cooler due to the surrounding forest, one also finds Riesling, which has displaced Silvaner, which used to be important.
In addition, the Schnaitmanns own parcels on the:
- Götzenberg
- Schlossberg
- Mönchsberg, south of Fellbach and east of Untertürkheim.
Nature provides everything for Schnaitmanns wines
From this diversity of sites and microclimates, Schnaitmann produces a panopticon of wines, be it white, rosé or red; sparkling and sweet wines are also in the portfolio. in 2016, the winery was certified for organic viticulture, so that the Schnaitmann wines can also be enjoyed with a good environmental conscience.
The vinification is carried out bit by bit with less and less influence, so little sulfur is used or even omitted, hardly any filtration or the wine is fermented spontaneously. The confidence in their own grapes is so high due to the careful work of the past years that the product speaks for itself.
