Schloss Vollrads

Schloss Vollrads is one of the oldest wineries in the world, with trade in wine documented as early as 1211. Today, Schloss Vollrads is a modern winery that cultivates exclusively Riesling on a vineyard area of about 80 hectares.

History of Schloss Vollrads

• 1097 first mention of the family in the family tree, they lived in the "Graue Haus" which is considered to be the oldest stone house in Germany
• 1211 first evidence of wine sales to Mainz to the St.Viktorstift
• 1330 first residential complexes are built on roman sites 
• 1650 enlargement of the castle
• 1684 manor house and the cellar of the winery are built
• 1814 Goethe visits Vollrads Castle
• 1897 The VDP Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates is founded; Schloss Vollrads is a founding member
• 1907 the manor house grows, the gardens are redesigned
• 1997 Erwein Count Matuschka-Greiffenclau dies and thus ends the family history of the winery
• 2001 Schloss Vollrads belongs to the top 100 wineries in the world
• 2011 800th anniversary of wine sales

The focus on Riesling

The goal is to produce Riesling of the highest quality, which authentically expresses the individuality and complexity of the Riesling grape as well as the regional character of the Rheingau soils. Tradition is both an obligation and a challenge. The passion for quality unites all employees of Schloss Vollrads, from the vineyard to the cellar to the tasting and sales in the Vinothek.

Sun for wine and electricity

Because Schloss Vollrads wants to continue making Riesling close to nature and with a clear conscience, they use cleanly generated electricity. Your photovoltaic system generates around 120,000 kilowatt hours per year, thus avoiding several tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
