The Salwey winery, located in Oberrotweil in the Kaiserstuhl region, is managed in the 3rd generation by Konrad Salwey, who is dedicated to the Kaiserstuhl classics of Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir.
Salwey - elegant Burgundy from the Kaiserstuhl
Salwey can rely on the finest Baden sites such as Oberrotweiler Henkenberg, Eichberg and Kirchberg. The volcanic and loess soils of the VDP top sites provide the wines from Salwey with clear, varietal aromas and a firm structure. As a result, Salwey Burgundy wines have a rich life span and a tasteful original note of the local terroir.
Large sites, great Burgundy wines
Konrad Salwey, winemaker, oenologist and Burgundy specialist in person, enjoys his time in the vineyards. After all, the Kirchberg is half vineyard, half nature reserve. Created countless years ago, volcanic rock with limestone veins is spread over the growing area. Even weathered lava flows offer the vines ideal basic conditions. According to personal taste, Salwey focuses on the three Burgundy varieties: Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. Depending on the location, the vines enjoy cool winds from France, warm sunshine or deep roots - perfect for Salwey's exclusively dry vinified wines.
The philosophy of the Salwey Winery
Respect for nature is one of the cornerstones of the Salwey philosophy. No wonder the vines ripen to full maturity naturally. For harvesting, the grapes are then harvested by hand, picked selectively and brought gently to the cellar. Another of the Salwey Winery's specialities is the complete fermentation of the mash. The wines are therefore absolutely dry. To mature, the various white and red wines spend their time in wooden barrels in the mountain cellar, which was cut into the rock of the former Niederrotweil quarry in 1997. This makes the wine a true speciality, which emphasises both the grape variety and the Baden terroir. Wine as natural as it can be, directly from the nature reserve.
The great sites of Salwey
Four different sites around the village of Oberrotweil belong to the Salwey winery. Salwey is a member of the VDP, the renowned Association of German Prädikat Wineries. Thus the names of the sites proudly bear the renowned appendix VDP Grosse Lage as their title. In addition to the grape varieties Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris, Muscatel and Chardonnay also thrive on the barren volcanic soils of the following sites:
- Kirchberg
- Henkenberg
- Eichberg
- Steingrubenberg
Salwey wines
The wines from the Salwey Winery range across a variety of quality levels, with something for everyone. Whether Gutswein, wine from the Reserve Salwey series or the Grosse Gewächs - the Burgundy specialist Salwey presents itself in a tasteful variety that is characterised by nature and volcanic terroir. The Baden winery from Oberrotweil is always worth a voyage of discovery, perhaps even in person, to see the falcons fly and experience a hike through some of the best sites in Germany.
