The cousins Ilario and Leopoldo Ruffino discovered their passion for winemaking in 1877 and subsequently founded the small winery Ruffino in the Tuscan town of Pontassieve near Florence. Today this winery is one of the most important Italian wine producers.
The two founders, Ilario and Leopoldo, were already aware at the time that in order to produce the best Tuscan wines, one needs access to the best vineyards. With this philosophy, the winery Ruffino in Tuscany now owns another five top estates in the most important Tuscan appellations:

- Gretole
- Greppone Mazzi
- La Solatia
- Montemasso
