Quinta do Portal Wines
Whether finest dry DOC Douro wines, high-quality Port wines or noble sweet Moscatel - in the production of quality wines of all varieties lies the heart and soul of Quinta do Portal.
Steep vineyards and 100 hectares of vineyards
The Quinta do Portal project, which began in the early 90s of the 20th century, is based on a century-old estate where the Branco family has been producing Port since the end of the 19th century. Today, in addition to the vineyards spread around the winery, four other vineyards (Quinta dos Moros, Quinta do Confradeiro, Quinta da Abelheira and Quinta do Manuela) are owned by the family. On steep terraces, mainly autochthonous grape varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Gouveio and Viosinho grow here, but also international varieties à la Tinta Roriz, as Tempranillo is called in Portugal.
Through sustainable cultivation, the variety of grape varieties, different altitudes, changing sun exposure and soils with different compositions opens the winery Quinta do Portal a huge selection of best vintage. The fine wines and balanced ports are the result born of passion and commitment, which is recognized nationally and internationally.

Quinta do Portal Port Wine
After the trio of grapes Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and Touriga Franca has been hand-picked in small quantities and transferred to the cellar, the experience of cellar masters Paulo Coutinhof for wine and Jeremy Bull for port wine comes into play. Controlled maceration takes place both in lagares, large stainless steel fermentation tanks, and in closed barrels. Now the fortified wine goes into used wine barrels for aging that lasts for months and years. Whether it is 1 year for the Quinta dos Moros Vintage Port from Pinhão or the 40 year old Tawny Port, full bodied ports from Duoro are not uncommon at Quinta do Portal. The incomparable style from native varieties paired with the long storage time convinces for years.
Facts about Quinta do Portal
- In the book "Facts about Port and Madeira" by Henry Vizetelly, it is mentioned that the Quinta do Portal estate was not affected by the phylloxera disaster. With this, the winery stands alone.
- The vineyard Quinta da Manuela, cultivated since 2009 and owned by the family since 2017, is classified with the "A" of the Região Demarcada do Douro. Thus, the site is considered one of the best in the Douro Valley.
- The estate is credited with being the first in the Douro Valley to have allowed women to harvest grapes. The sight Henry Vizetelly describes the ladies dancing in ecstasy through the vines as undoubtedly amusing, but also not exactly decent.
