Quinta da Romaneira - Wine from the slopes of the Douro River
Quinta da Romaneira is one of the important and historically significant wineries in the Douro Valley. Above the "royal river", the Douro, its terraced vineyards rise on over 85 hectares. These terraces were painstakingly carved into the slate rocks centuries ago and have since formed the basis of a unique terroir, ensuring the consistently high quality of Quinta da Romaneira's highly awarded wines.
Touringa National, the Portuguese country grape
The main grape grown here is the "Portuguese national grape" Touriga Nacional, but Touriga Franca, Tinto Cão and Tinta Roriz and a few hectares of white grapes thrive there. The oldest written references to the winery date back to the 17th and 18th centuries, since when changing owners have tended and enlarged the vineyards. In the mid-19th century, da Romaneira is listed as one of the first major quintas on Baron Joseph James Forrester's famous Douro map, and in 1872, Quinta da Romaneira Single Vintage Ports are among the first ports to be auctioned at Christie's. Finally, in the 1940s, the Monteiro de Barros family took over the winery and expanded the property to its current size.
Douro wines from optimal production
Today, Quinta da Romaneira firmly believes that its magnificent vineyards produce not only exquisite Vintage Port, but also fine, powerful unfortified Douro wines. Meanwhile, Douro red wines are the winery's second most important line of business. Also for this purpose, a new winery was built in 2005, which was optimally adapted to the prevailing conditions and where two-thirds of the wines can be stored underground and thus consistently cool.
