The wine of the popes: Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Bernard Friedmann originally comes from the wine trade and has only been a winemaker for six years. As a wine connoisseur and connoisseur, he fulfilled his dream of owning his own winery with Porte Rouge. He bought vineyards in the best and most renowned terroir of the southern Rhône - in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. In this place with the best sites for Grenache, he was able to acquire six vineyards with old vines, which provided the best conditions to realize his ideas.
Domaine Porte Rouge is located in the center of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The buildings were used by a silk factory until 1907, when a cooperage moved in. At that time, the current cellar was also carved into the rock. The name Porte Rouge (= Red Door) is not derived from the actual red cellar door, but from the Provençal word "Orouse" for wind. In fact, the mistral not infrequently blows or even storms through the vineyards on the Rhône. As a result, the vines dry quickly after rain and are thus well protected from fungal diseases and do not need to be otherwise protected from them.
