The Pinot Nero Umbria IGT by Tenuta Castello della Sala of Marchesi Antinori presents ruby red in the glass with slight garnet red nuances. On the nose aromas of violets and wild berries unfold, the first impression on the palate is characterized by balance, elegance and complexity, carried by sweet, soft tannins, which are complemented by fruitiness and spiciness. Long-lasting finish with delicate mineral note in reverberation.
Vinification of the Pinot Nero Umbria IGT of Castello della Sala
The grapes for this varietal Pinot Noir come from the single vineyard Consola, only 4 hectares in size, at over 400m above sea level on calcareous, sandy sedimentary soils, planted in terraces along the hill. It was first produced in 1990. This red terroir wine from Umbria is, in a sense, a rarity in the wine-growing region dominated by white grape varieties and can be regarded as the counterpart to the renowned Cervaro della Sala.
Thegrapes are harvested manually, gently pressed, filled into small conical containers in which maceration and alcoholic fermentation take place at 26°C, then the wine is transferred into French barriques. Here it performs the complete malolactic fermentation and the subsequent ageing over ten months. After bottling, the Pinot Nero matures for over a year in the bottle store before it is placed on the market.
If stored correctly, the Pinot Nero Castello della Sala may be over 10 years old.
