The Pinot Nero Umbria IGT from Tenuta Castello della Sala is ruby red in the glass with slightly garnet nuances. On the nose the aromas of violets and wild berries unfold, the first impression on the palate is characterised by balance, elegance and complexity, supported by sweet, soft tannins which are complemented by fruitiness and spice. Long finish with a delicate mineral note in the aftertaste.
Vinification of Pinot Nero Umbria IGT from Castello della Sala.
The grapes for this pure Pinot Noir come from the single vineyard Consola, only 4 hectares large, in over 400m altitude on calcareous, sandy sediment soils, in terraces along the hill. It was first produced in 1990. This red terroir wine from Umbria is a rarity in the white vine dominated wine region and can be considered as the counterpart to the renowned Cervaro della Sala.
The grapes are harvested manually, gently pressed, placed in small conical vats in which they are macerated and alcoholic fermented at 26°C. The wine is then transferred to French barriques where the malolactic fermentation takes place and the wine then ages for 10 months. After bottling, the Pinot Nero matures for more than a year before being sold.
If properly stored, the Pinot Nero Castello della Sala can last more than 10 years.
