Philipponnat

Philipponnat is a French winery that produces champagne. 

Philipponnat - the winery that found its way back to the family

It is owned by the Philipponnat family of the same name, whose wine history in the region dates back to the 16th century. At that time they were winemakers and merchants for the court of Louis XIV, supplying him with wine. At that time, the cellars were part of the Château de Mareuil. Philipponnat was founded in 1910 by Pierre Philipponnat. Then, at the end of the 1980s, the winery was bought by Marie-Brizard. The family was not quite comfortable with the idea and even after ten years could not get used to it. So, just before the turn of the millennium, Pierre's great-nephew decided to buy back the winery. And so today the winery still belongs to Charles Philipponnat and is located in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ. in 2004, Charles had a second winery built next to the first. 

Cuvées from the warmest terroir at Philipponat

The company is best known for its luxurious cuvées (brut and rosé) from the Clos des Goisses vintage. The grapes for these blends are harvested from a 5.5 hectare walled vineyard. This hill knows how to boast an unshaded 45-degree south-facing slope and is considered the warmest terroir in the region. The collection also includes the non-vintage Royale Réserve line and a wide range of styles of vintage wines. Traditionally, all wines are aged in tanks or in old oak barrels.

In total, the vineyards cover 18 hectares of vines, all located in

• Mareuil-sur-Aÿ
• Avenay Val d'Or and
• Mutigny

are located.

They are all classified as Premier or Grand Cru. In the cellar, Philipponnat uses a special system for aging the reserve wine component of its non-vintage blends. A quarter to a third of the reserve wine stored in barrels is blended with the current year's production, and a portion of this blend is retained as reserve wine for the following year.
