Like many winemakers and wineries, Australia's Penfolds once started small. The long-established winery was founded in 1844 by the English physician Dr. Christopher Rawson-Penfold, who recommended wine to his patients as a health tonic. Dr. Christopher Rawson planted the vines in Magill, nine kilometers from Adelaide, in southern Australia. Magill Estate is still the headquarters of the estate today. Until 1962, the estate was continued by Rawson-Penfold's descendants.
Grange - The most valuable wine in Australia
Attempts by the former cellar master of Penfolds, Max Schubert, in the years between 1945 and 1951 finally led to the production of the most famous and most valuable wine of Penfolds, indeed of all Australia - the Shiraz Grange Hermitage, which since 1990 has simply been called Grange. Since 2002, the Grange is also vinified again on Magill Estate.
In addition to the very great Grange, Penfolds also vinifies:
The Koonunga Hill Series and
the Bin Series (also the numbering in Bins (=containers) was an ingenious idea of Max Schubert)
