More information about Mephisto - Robert Goldenits

The Mephisto from the pen of Robert Goldenits from Burgenland shows a bright, purple color in the swirled glass. Held at a slight angle, a transition of hue toward garnet red is discernible at the edges of this barrel-aged wine. Swiveling the glass, one can perceive a perfect balance in this red wine, as it does not stand out watery or syrupy or liqueur-like on the walls of the glass. To the nose, this Robert Goldenits red wine reveals all sorts of blackberries. As if that were not already impressive, white pepper, black cherry and licorice join in due to the aging in large wooden barrels.

The Robert Goldenits Mephisto presents itself pleasantly dry to the wine lover. This red wine is never coarse or meager, but round and smooth. Balanced and complex, this dense red wine presents itself on the palate. In the finish, this mature wine from the wine-growing region of Burgenland finally inspires with considerable length. Once again, hints of blackberry appear. In the aftertaste, mineral notes of the soils dominated by loess and sand join in.

Vinification of the Mephisto by Robert Goldenits

Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah grapes are the basis for the first-class and wonderfully balanced Cuvée Mephisto by Robert Goldenits. In Burgenland, the vines that produce the grapes for this wine grow on soils of sand and loess. Without question, Mephisto is also determined by the climate and viticultural style of Lake Neusiedl. This Austrian can be called an Old World wine in the best sense of the word, and it presents itself in an extraordinarily impressive way. The fact that the Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah grapes thrive under the influence of a rather cool climate also has a very high influence on the ripening of the vintage. This manifests itself, among other things, in particularly long and uniform grapes and rather moderate alcohol content in the wine. When the perfect physiological ripeness is ensured, the grapes for the Mephisto are harvested exclusively by hand without the use of punishing and hardly selective full harvesters. After the harvest, the grapes are immediately taken to the press house. Here they are selected and carefully broken up. Fermentation then takes place in large wood at controlled temperatures. After the end of fermentation, the elegant Mephisto is aged for another 24 months in French oak barrels.

Food recommendation for the Robert Goldenits Mephisto

Drink this red wine from Austria ideally tempered at 15 - 18°C as a companion to vegetable couscous with beef meatballs, duck breast with sugar snap peas or stuffed peppers.
