Lombardy

(111)

The natural beauty of the Lombardy wine region offers blue lakes, high mountains, green flora, warm sunshine and excellent vineyards. Maybe the longing for Italy has its beginning here. Where plump red grapes ripen, where noble sparkling wines are deliciously sparkling, there is northern Italy's Lombardy. Internationally, Lombardy wines are not always the focus of attention. That is regrettable. Because between the Alps and the Po Valley, wine is produced that is simply delicioso.

Lombardy

The natural beauty of the Lombardy wine region offers blue lakes, high mountains, green flora, warm sunshine and excellent vineyards. Maybe the longing for Italy has its beginning here. Where plump red grapes ripen, where noble sparkling wines are deliciously sparkling, there is northern Italy's Lombardy. Internationally, Lombardy wines are not always the focus of attention. That is regrettable. Because between the Alps and the Po Valley, wine is produced that is simply delicioso.

The scattered vineyards of Lombardy

The Lombardy wine region is home to several first-class vineyards. However, these are widely scattered throughout the northern Italian province. Preferred sites are, for example, to be found near the well-known lakes. The Franciacorta vineyard is located directly south of the Lago d'Iseo. This is where the very popular and exquisite Franciacorta sparkling wines come from. To the east of this central wine location is the beautiful Lago di Garda, about 50 km from Lago d'Iseo. The Lugana vineyard can be found here. From here comes the fresh and pleasant Lugana DOC. A wonderful white wine, which is mainly made from the Trebbiano di Soave grape variety. Far away, in the west of Lombardy near Voghera, is the largest wine growing area. Oltrepò Pavese has DOC and DOCG wine. Here the Spumante is often vinified with bottle fermentation. In the north, at the foot of the Alps, the terraces of Valtellina are worth seeing.

The Lombard wine terraces of Valtellina

The wine terraces of Valtellina are situated high in the north of Lombardy. They are located in the province of Sondrio, where they join Switzerland. In the Swiss Confederation, the Valtellina wine region is known as Valtellina. The wine terraces provide a beautiful sight. At maturity, the leafy green vines, which almost exclusively bear red grapes, stand in front of the alpine hills. A clear blue sky and warm sunshine provide a pleasant aesthetic experience.

Nebbiolo in Lombardy

In this part of Lombardy, the Nebbiolo grape variety is the preferred one. This demanding red grape variety grows on calcareous soils and needs a long time to reach maturity. No other grape variety in the world takes longer than Nebbiolo. Patience pays off, however. The high proportion of tannins produces a very dark red wine. The extensive maturing process also ensures a long shelf life. If wines really should improve with age, then this is explicitly true for Nebbiolo. The red wine with pronounced acidity needs some time to develop fully. If the bottle is opened after several years, the noble variety exudes a fruity, fragrant bouquet. Violets, roses, plums, and sometimes berries mix with subtle notes of tar or truffle. But please do not open too early! If the Nebbiolo is too young, it usually does not taste good. On the southern slopes of the Valtellina wine-growing region, the choosy grape variety finds very good conditions in Lombardy.

The DOCG wine from Lombardy

In principle, Lombardy has good wine. However, some wines are awarded the DOCG quality label because they meet high standards. They are:

  • Sforzato di Valtellina
  • Valtellina Superiore
  • Franciacorta
  • Oltrepò Pavese Spumante Metodo Classico
  • Oltrepò Pavese Spumante Metodo Classico Pinot Nero
  • Moscato di Scanzo

Spumante - the sparkling wine from Lombardy

The delightfully fizzy Spumante is a sparkling wine. In Lombardy, the most renowned spumanti come from the vineyards of the Franciacorta and Oltrepò Pavese areas. The sparkling wine is very reminiscent of champagne and can occasionally compete with its quality. The spumante develops its full flavour by bottle fermentation (Metodo Classico). All in all, there are spumanti that shimmer predominantly straw yellow or convince with a beautiful pink. Lombard sparkling wine sparkles wonderfully and leaves a noticeable tingling sensation on the palate. High-quality spumante after the Metodo Classico is not cheap and does not have to be. Because the round sparkling wine is something for special occasions and an excellent companion for these.

Lombardy short & concise

The Lombardy wine region is located in northern Italy. It is part of the province of the same name, which is also the most populous province in Italy. The province of Lombardy borders on the Alps and Switzerland in the north. To the west is the Italian province of Piedmont, to the east the provinces of Trentino-Alto Adige and Veneto. The southern part of Lombardy is characterised by the Po Valley and borders the province of Emilia-Romagna. The centre of Lombardy is the metropolis of Milan. In addition to the beautiful lakes Lago di Garda or Lago di Como, the wine-growing area with the vineyards Oltrepò Pavese, Valtellina or Franciacorta is also very impressive. Lombardy is known for sparkling and red wine.
