Fattoria Le Mortelle - Wines from the heart of Maremma
The winery Fattoria Le Mortelle is located a few kilometers from Castiglione della Pescaia, in the southern part of Tuscany, immersed in an impressive landscape between hills and sea, surrounded by places rich in history. The Marchesi Antinori family has been working on vineyards and on the new winery since 1999, from historical documents of the 19th century it is proved that they have always owned land right here and in 1863 Poggio franco, one of the best single vineyards of the estate and other plots belonged to their property. Fattoria Le Mortelle today is composed of 270 hectares of land, of which 170 hectares are vineyards, an old manor house and a modern winery built into the hill.
Le Mortelle - Innovation in the vineyards
The Marchesi Antinori family is convinced that this wine-growing area, which is still emerging in Italy, has a high destiny for the production of quality wines and that the terroir and characteristics of the grape varieties grown here can be expressed in an ideal way. On 170 hectares of vineyards are grown mainly Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, some white grape varieties such as the native Vermentino and Ansonica, as well as Viognier, and also a small percentage of Carménère. The soils are medium heavy, sandy and clayey, the composition is mainly characterized by silicates and clay, in some places very skeletal.
An underground wine cellar in the hill for Le Mortelle
The winery is located on a hill, into whose crest the wine cellar was literally built, harmonizing perfectly with the surrounding landscape. The aim was to have as little impact on the environment as possible, so that natural materials were used and the existing rocks in the depth of the soil with their thermal regulation were utilized.
The wine cellar has been designed cylindrically over three levels like a snail shell, inside it all the phases of winemaking take place, taking advantage of the natural slope, from the moment of arrival of the grapes, to vinification, storage and aging in barriques in the deepest level. This process takes place entirely without the use of pumps, which gives the wines a higher quality and at the same time saves energy.
