White winedryItalyTrentino-Alto Adige (IT)Alto Adige /Südtirol DOC (IT)
Terlan on the South Tyrolean Wine Road is flanked on all sides by the mighty Alps, steep slopes with vineyards and apple meadows. In the middle of it all stands the Cantina Terlan and not without reason.
The Cantina Terlan winery
A unique terroir of volcanic outcrops, cool glacial winds and sub-Mediterranean warmth combine in the old vines that sharpen their character vintage after vintage. The Terlan DOC growing area on the Tschöggelberg packs it all into long-lived white wines and mineral-rich reds, and the Cantina Terlan winery decelerates the potpourri with the typical serenity of South Tyrol.
Terlan wine from Cantina Terlan
Whether single-varietal and long-lived specialties or harmonious cuvées - Cantina Terlan offers a wide variety of top wines from South Tyrol. Perennial favorites such as Terlaner Alto Adige DOC, a white wine dating back to the winery's founding, allow delicious aromas of green apples and lemon balm to glide into the glass on any occasion. Of course, a South Tyrolean winery cannot be without the local Lagrein red wine - velvety body, intense fruit and dark garnet red. And for friends of irrepressible joie de vivre, there is always a reason to serve a rosé from Cantina Terlan. The small wine village in South Tyrol offers a wide selection for every taste.
A special terroir - Terlan in South Tyrol
Italy's northernmost wine-growing region is virtually predestined for the cultivation of white grape varieties. And the Terlan winery, with small plots at up to 900 meters on the slopes of the Tschöggelberg, provides purposeful care for each one of them. The soil is the result of ancient deposits of a glacier that mixed sand, clay, mud faults and skeleton-rich soil with the volcanic lava rock, revealing today an inimitable diversity.
The climate also shows its best side, as far as viticulture is concerned. The high Alps protect Terlan from cold winds from the north, whereas mild currents from the south blow over the valley and combine with the freshness of the surrounding glaciers. The sun shines more than 2100 hours a year and heats up many a day to up to 38° C. Falling winds then cool the valley drastically at night. Hot days, icy nights and very low rainfall promote the Terlan viticulture in its own special way.
Top DOC wines from South Tyrol
Time is a big word for Cantina Terlan, which was founded in 1893 as one of the first cellar cooperatives in the quaint wine village. A total of 24 winegrowers united with the aim of promoting sales and joint production. And time has been kind to the association. Today, 143 people stand behind the Cantina Terlan winery, pressing 1.5 million bottles of Terlan wine annually on a vineyard area of 190 hectares.
The steep slopes between 250 and 900 meters require careful manual work so that the grape varieties Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc, Pinot blanc find their way to the winery. Up to 400 meters the red grape varieties Merlot, Lagrein and Vernatsch thrive. The mix of international and autochthonous varieties makes the portfolio of Cantina Terlan extremely interesting, not least because of the subtle nuances that the terroir sells.

Cantina Terlan - Quality standards
The winery vinifies about 70% white wines and therefore 30% red wines - 100% of which are under the supervision of oenologist Rudi Kofler. The winemaker's work in the cellar picks up on the high quality of the vineyard, so that all wines are allowed to bear the coveted Terlan DOC on the label. Each bottle internalizes the Terlan terroir. The winery's pronounced goal: to preserve the strengths of the region in the wine from cultivation to the finished wine. In addition, the Terlan winery takes its time during vinification so that the wine can mature perfectly before it goes on sale. Pure minerality paired with freshness and luscious spice characterize the white wines, while the fruit and longevity of the wines are unparalleled - no wonder Terlan wine from Cantina Terlan Winery is receiving international acclaim. Taste it and enjoy it!
