Grenache Wine - the team player

(559)

In addition to its fruity and soft characteristics, Grenache possesses real team spirit. As one of the most cultivated grape varieties in the world, one would think that the name, in all its variations, would be prominently displayed on the labels. But if you look around you will hardly find Garnacha, Garnatxa, Cannonau or Alicante - all synonyms for the Grenache grape variety.

Because Grenache wine is an ideal blending partner for a variety of grapes. And so the Grenache lives its existence as a grape variety recognized worldwide and thus cultivated everywhere. Grenache lends every wine a fruity and alcoholic character when there is need for quality wine - tasty teamwork for vinified perfection.

Grenache, Garnacha, gladly more

Although the experts are still philosophising about where the Grenache grape variety comes from - the choice is between the northeast of Spain and Sardinia - it is a well-established fact that Grenache comes from the Kingdom of Aragon, to which both regions in question belonged throughout history. So the Spanish name Garnacha would be the most common term. Nevertheless, France has made such an effort to produce the red grape variety that Grenache has the largest wine-growing area in French vineyards. From there it went into the whole world. From Australia via South Africa to Chile, Garnacha with its elegance and pale colour is ideal for achieving a rounded taste in combination with Tempranillo, Syrah, Mouvèrdre or Cinsault. Rosé wines are no challenge for Grenache either, because of their already light colour. In addition, the grapes accumulate a lot of sugar while they enjoy the sun on the strong stem vines - perfect conditions for sweet and dessert wines, such as a sweet cava or the ancient Spanish Gran Parlet dessert wine.

Taste of Grenache wines

Grenache copes well with heat and dryness and creates a lot of fructose in the black grapes. When dry, this means a high alcohol content, which is reflected in the almost pale, low-tannin body. This is accompanied by fine and fruity aromas of strawberry, blueberry, cherry, pomegranate and are rounded off with spicy pepper, herbs and leather. Grenache wines are often poor in tannins and are mild and soft. In cuvées, the Grenache therefore plays an important role as a supple supplier of alcohol, which fuses with the colour and structure of the blend partners. Rosé wines, on the other hand, have a mineral note with aromas of strawberry and herbs. The Grenache grape variety offers the winegrowers a variety of aging possibilities, so that we can pass these treasures on to you. Whether red, white, rosé, sweet, semi-sparkling, dessert, dry, semi-dry, sweet - Garnacha is a mainstay of the wine world, without any great airs and graces.

Things to know about Grenache

What is Grenache?

Grenache is a red wine grape that probably originates from Aragon and has spread from there all over the world. Today Grenache is one of the most cultivated grape varieties in the world, with about 240,000 hectares worldwide. Grenache wines are pale in colour, poor in tannins, but rich in alcohol and fruit. Due to their worldwide distribution, various synonyms have developed for Grenache. In Spain Garnacha, Guarnaccia or Garnatxa, in Tuscany Alicante, in Sicily Cannonau and again Grenache in Australia and the USA.

What goes well with Grenache?

As a red wine, Grenache goes well with game, braised meat and vegetables, cheese and fried poultry.

How long can Grenache wine be stored?

Grenache wines should be drunk young. Only highly concentrated and yield-reduced wines can be kept for decades, such as Grenache wines from the Rhône, especially from the Chateauneuf du Pape region. A cool, dark, temperature-resistant storage place is conducive for this.

How long does an open bottle of Garnacha wine last?

Like all red wines, an open bottle lasts up to 7 days in the refrigerator. The shelf life is reduced however with a low filling level of the bottle. Half a bottle can therefore only be kept for about 4 days.

What is the ideal drinking temperature for Grenache wines?

The ideal drinking temperature for Grenache wines lies between 15 and 18°C..
