Grauburgunder or Pinot Grigio - as long as it's Pinot Gris

Originally from Burgundy, the Grauburgunder, with its fresh and tangy character, has tasted its way into the glasses of gourmets and the favor of winemakers. From Germany, Italy, France to overseas - Pinot Grigio is a fresh and low-acid companion for many occasions and dishes, which makes every day special and makes the palate want more.

The Pinot Gris, or Pinot Grigio or Grauburgunder for cosmopolitans, originated a long time ago from a mutation of the Pinot Noir, which took place in the heights of the vineyards of Burgundy. To this day, the Pinot Gris has retained the reddish grapes with a slight tinge of grey. But a lot has changed since then. In Burgundy, Pinot Gris is no longer cultivated. Today, Alsace leads the way for Pinot Gris by producing fine and flowery white wines from France. The grape variety experienced a strong upswing in Italy around 1980. Under the name Pinot Grigio, the reddish grape developed into a trendy white wine. And in Germany, too, the image of the Zechwein has changed into a high-quality and elegant white wine for tasty parties.

Taste of a widely travelled wine

As diverse as the colours of Burgundy grapes, Pinot Gris has enormous potential for rosé wines, orange wines and white wines in all flavours, from dry to sweet. When pouring a Grauburgunder, the white wine shines pale yellow to amber with full power in the glass. Low in acidity and quite rich in alcohol, with about 13 % vol., the full-bodied Pinot Gris expresses itself with accents of apples, pears, nuts, citrus and partly exotic fruits such as mango and grapefruit. A fresh, fruity delicacy for the nose and palate - tasty to drink, easy to enjoy.

Origin of the Grauburgunder, Pinot Grigio and Pinot Gris

Originally from Burgundy, it was the Cistercian monks who exported the grapes from France, via Austria, to Hungary. The wine was drunk, loved and yet forgotten. Only the merchant Johann Seger Ruland rediscovered the Pinot Gris on his travels and spread the fine grapes throughout Germany. To this day, the grape variety is also known as Ruländer, especially in Austria.
Some time passed before the Pinot Gris established itself as one of the most important grape varieties for Italian white wine. This position has not changed to this day. Only the quality fluctuated from delicious white wine to almost undrinkable mass-produced wine and back again. A development the German white wine from the Grauburgunder grape did not succumb. Rather, the reputation of the Pinot Gris, due to young winegrowers with fresh ideas, changed from table wine to quality wine.

Our VINELLO recommendation

Grauburgunder MP dry - Markus Pfaffmann

An example of the new German understanding of the Grauburgunder. The Pinot Gris MP dry by Markus Pfaffmann. With a youthful ripeness of the fruits in the body and elegant aromas of pear, apple and mirabelle in the nose, the Pinot Gris from the Palatinate balances between freshness and minerality. Just a wine for a sunny Sunday under a sunshade.

The word pinot comes from the French word "pin" - pine.

Pinot Grigio Veneto IGT - Villa Albinoni

When it comes to Pinot Gris, the Pinot Grigio is not far. Light yellow and wonderfully fruity, the Pinot Grigio Veneto from Villa Albinoni has a typical apple and citrus bouquet with floral notes. This white wine, with its Mediterranean climate, is ideal as an aperitif or with fish dishes.
