In the center of the Italian municipality of Neive is the Elio Filippino winery. The picturesque village on a hill is surrounded by vineyards and has the status of UNESCO World Heritage Site. Filippino wine is produced here, entirely dedicated to the character of the grapes and the soil.
Elio Filippino's beginnings
Evaristo Filippino no longer wanted to sell the grapes obtained from his vineyards only to other producers in the Piedmont region and, at the beginning of the 20th century, founded his own winery on the right bank of the Tanaro River. In the 1950s, his son Domenico took over his father's business and began bottling the first bottles with his own label in the late 1980s. Since 1997, Elio Filippino, grandson of the founder, has managed the winery and continues to be committed to the philosophy of wine as an expression of the region.
Viticulture in the UNESCO region
Nestled in the hilly landscape of the Langhe, Elio grows his wines on a total of 10 hectares. Soil types such as clay, calcareous marl, blue marl, tufa, sand and sulfurous limestone characterize the region. The vineyards are located on the hills of Serra Capelli and San Cristoforo, which offer a breathtaking panorama as far as the province of Asti.
The wines of Elio Filippino
Elio Filippino describes his way of farming as "precision viticulture", putting into one word the targeted production of extremely high quality wines. The following wines are produced by the estate:
Dolcetto d'Alba
Barbera d'Alba
Nebbiolo
Barbaresco
Barolo
Moscato d'Asti
Arneis
The Barbaresco Riserva, which Elio Filippino produces in three levels of aging: 5, 10, and 15 years, have a special position.
Elio Filippino attaches great importance to the traditional, natural production of wine. Thus, a lot of work is done by hand, the grass is cut by hand. No chemical fertilizers or herbicides are used, only natural fertilization is allowed.
