Elena Walch - the Donna del Vino of South Tyrol
Elena Walch, who actually trained as an architect, has been putting all her energy into her own vineyards since 1985, because "good wine doesn't grow by itself," says Elena. Today, the career changer can boast not only an excellent base line, but also the two top South Tyrolean cru vineyards Castel Ringberg and Kastelaz. Today, both are 100% owned by the Walch family.
Elena Walch is committed to the tradition of South Tyrolean viticulture, but has both feet on the ground of South Tyrolean reality. Modern technology and uncompromising innovation in the vineyard and cellar have always been important to her. Piece by piece, therefore, the pergolas planted with Vernatsch have been cleared in favor of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet and Merlot vines planted according to modern Guyot training.
Low yields, impeccable harvests and a particularly gentle vinification of the wines with targeted use of wood produce particularly focused, fruity and at the same time elegant white wines with a fine varietal typicity
But not only white wine, also red wine Elena Walch masters like the 1x1. Full-bodied and harmonious red wines from South Tyrol, true powerhouses with manners, are the result. Above Lake Kaltern, at an altitude of 380 meters, is Castel Ringberg, the estate of the Walch family and still the largest contiguous vineyard in South Tyrol. The pitoresque Renaissance castle, built in the 17th century by the Habsburgs, is surrounded by 20 hectares of vineyards. Not only international grape varieties grow here, but also the autochthonous Lagrein has been newly planted.
