Du Toit origin story

The Du Toit family settled in the Cape in 1686 and in the years that followed established themselves as respected farmers, laying the foundations for a strong wine culture in the region. The age-old craft of winemaking has been passed down through the generations and the traditional techniques are still used today. After years of experience on various prestigious estates such as Lourensford, Lanzerac, Rhebokskloof and KWV, the Du Toit family wines are now made on a small estate in Paarl.

Viticulture in South Africa goes back to the Dutchman Jan van Riebeeck, a ship's doctor of the Vereenigde Ostindische Compagnie, who first cultivated wine here because it was more durable on ship voyages and he wanted to treat scurvy, a very well-known seafarer's disease, with it. His successor Simon van der Stel, a wine lover, was the final push to get the ball rolling and bring viticulture after a long time to where it is today: South Africa is one of the largest wine exporters in the world, half of the wine pressed annually goes outside the country.

Du Toit winegrowing area

Du Toit's vineyards are close to the wild coastline, so it's no surprise that the wine's maritime character is defined and shaped by the climatic conditions that characterise the area. Cool, crisp sea air brings much-needed cooling to wine in South Africa, with its dry, hot summers, and heavy fog wafting inland brings a fair amount of moisture.
In addition, grapes are selected and purchased from different wine-growing regions in South Africa in order to be able to round off the portfolio with further wines. For instance, grapes from Wellington or Paarl are the basis for some of the Du Toit wines.
