The estate was founded by Karl Wehrheim in the buildings of a historic Art Nouveau farm in the village of Birkweiler in 1920.
Weingut Dr. Wehrheim - Great wines from the Palatinate soil
To this day, and certainly in the future, the family plays a defining role at Weingut Dr. Wehrheim. In the meantime, the fourth generation is involved in the production of classic dry wine. Karl-Heinz Wehrheim has been managing the work in the vineyard and wine cellar since 1992, and his son Franz joined the winery in 2010 while still a student of oenology. Wehrheim's wife and three daughters are also involved. And even senior Dr. Heinz Wehrheim, who is more than 90 years old, is still on hand to advise.
Come time, come character
The philosophy of Karl-Heinz Wehrheim, owner of the Dr. Wehrheim winery, clearly describes how a great wine should be. Quote:
"Offer harmony and balance without being sweet. Embody fullness without being 'fat'. Spicy, mineral and independent taste, without relying on a superficial fruit. Intense and multi-layered in aroma."
Whether a wine is aged in wooden barrels or stainless steel tanks is not an end in itself. The decision is made according to what is best for each individual wine. Wehrheim also lets his wines age until they have developed their ideal character .
Sustainability for future generations at Dr. Wehrheim
Karl-Heinz Wehrheim knows about his obligation and responsibility for nature and for future generations, who should also live from viticulture. That is why they have been working biodynamically since 2007 and consistently pursue this type of cultivation. Since 2010, all wines of the estate are certified organic. On the one hand, the aim is to preserve the cultural and ecological heritage. On the other hand, the biodynamic cultivation also affects the quality and the particular typicity of the wines.
Achieving good things through conflict - Weingut Dr. Wehrheim
Karl-Heinz Wehrheim was also a co-founder of the association "Five Winegrowers - Five Friends", a cooperation with other leading wineries of the Southern Palatinate, who at a celebration in 1991 forged a then rather ambitious plan, namely to produce "really great wines" on Palatinate soil. The approach and working method was unusual. The five winemakers took it upon themselves to achieve their goal through collegial exchange and open cooperation, and also through cultivated dispute and joint wine trips. In the meantime, other winemakers have joined this successful alliance.
The grape varieties at Dr. Wehrheim are:
Pinot Blanc
Chardonnay
Riesling
Pinot Noir
