Already the founder of Delheim, Hans Otto Hoheisen, knew that behind every successful man is a strong woman.
Delheim Winery - A sparrow takes to the skies
So Hans Otto Hoheisen unceremoniously renamed his farm "De Drie Sprong" in honor of his wife Deli - Delheim (Deli's home) was born. The more recent history is closely linked to the winemaking icon Michael Hans "Spatz" Sperling.
From Lake Constance to Stellenbosch
in 1951, he came from Tettnang on Lake Constance to the Stellenbosch estate run by his uncle Hans and aunt Deli. Young, penniless but with a vision to make a name for himself in viticulture. When a friend commented on his latest wine creation over sauerkraut one leisurely Sunday afternoon, "Sparrow, that's really filthy!" his ambition was finally awakened. As a result, he turned the quality screw mightily, unceremoniously gave the white wine the name "Spatzendreck" and equipped it with the ironic and world-famous label. Although or precisely because the renowned Decanter then awarded him the prize "worst label of the year", the wine became a sales hit.
Awards upon awards for Delheim Wines
In the meantime, Spatz and his Delheim Winery are on a real high and can enjoy far more prestigious awards. As the recipient of the 1659 Medal of Honor, South Africa's highest wine award, he is in the best company with Nelson Mandela or former KWV legend André du Toit. In the meantime, the day-to-day business has been passed on to the next generation around Nora and Victor. The family is particularly proud of its Pinotage Rosé - an absolute must for rosé lovers and voted the best rosé wine in South Africa by Weinwirtschaft magazine in 2012.
The grape varieties
The Delheim winery grows the following grape varieties, among others:
- Cabernet Sauvignon
- Sauvignon Blanc
- Chenin Blanc
