Deakin Estate is an Australian winery located on the Murery River.
From no man's land to oasis - Deakin Estate
In the 1880s, the region around the present-day town of Mildura in the Australian state of Victoria went from being a no-man's land to an oasis for agribusiness, growing citrus, olives, almonds and grapes. The culprit was Australia's former Prime Minister, Alfred Deakin, who encouraged the Chaffey Brothers from California to farm the land.
The winery and its name
Today, the Deakin Estate winery, located in this very region, is named after this very Prime Minister. At first, the grapes ripened on the land were not used to make wine, but were sold as fruit. However, with the construction of a winery in 1980, the production of Australian wines with the special character typical of the country began.
The grape varieties
Today, the vineyards of Deakin Estates cover 217 hectares, stretching along the River Murray. The main grape varieties grown are
- Chardonnay
- Sauvignon Blanc
- Colombard
- Semillon
- Cabernet Sauvignon
- Shiraz
- and Merlot.
The winemaker Frank Newman
The winemaker in charge of Deakin Estate is Frank Newman. The likeable Australian adopts the motto of his soccer club for his work with the grapes: Nil satis nisi optimum - he is only really satisfied with the very best. His efforts pay off, as Deakin Estate now sells its wines in 30 countries worldwide.
