crusted port of Niepoort is vinified from Sousão, Tinta Amarela, Tinta Cão, Tinta Francisca, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Francesa, Touriga Nacional and other red Portuguese grape varieties.
This port shimmers in a rich ruby red with dark red highlights in the glass. The expressive bouquet is characterized by the typical portal aromas. dried plum combines with juicy cherry and fine hints of mint. The aromas of the nose are also reflected on the palate and are underlined by hints of chocolate. The body is wonderfully dense with soft tannin and a well-integrated acid structure. The long-lasting finale is accompanied by cherry nuances.
Vinification of Port Crusted Niepoort The grapes
for this port come from the single vineyards Vinha da Pisca, Vale do Pinhão and Ferrão and from 60 to over 100 years old vines. Harvesting takes place exclusively by hand in the period from September to October.
Once the harvested goods have arrived at the winery in Vale de Mendiz, they are crushed with their feet in Lagares using a traditional method. The mash remains in the lagars for fermentation and is pumped into large, used wooden barrels (2500 l) after the fermentation process has been completed. In these barrels this port wine matures for a total of 3 years.
