Between the mighty Columbia River to the south and the barren Horse Heaven Hills to the north lies Columbia Crest Winery, surrounded by 2,500 acres of vineyards.

Untameable Nature in Bottles - Columbia Crest Winery

The sun shines 17 hours in the summer with lush temperatures reaching 40° C, with winters taking on arctic features. Rain, on the other hand, is almost nonexistent. The largest wine producer in Washington State thrives on this steppe-like terroir. This is because it contains the strengths of the Single Vineyards wines, which are considered to be the expressive flagship of Washington State wine.

Bordeaux style in the Wild West - Columbia Crest wine

Columbia Cr est wines are usually found at the top end of lists by trade magazines and experts. That in no way stops Columbia Crest Winery on its path to the highest quality wine. Thanks to excellent vineyards and manual labor, the best grapes develop. The perfect start for the vinification of the Two Vines line and the Grand Estates wines, which enjoy great demand both nationally and internationally. Whether harmonious red wine cuvée or straight white wines - Columbia Crest offers variety from the top sites from the Columbia Valley to the Walla Walla Valley.

Grape variety list of the premium winery

Since 1983, the still fairly young winery from Paterson has been operating as part of Ste. Michelle Wine Estates, under which the Chateau Ste. Michelle winery also produces top wines. However, Columbia Crest has made the most of its short time and, in addition to other experts, has also convinced Wine Spectator, which awarded the premium winery the Wine of the Year Producer title in 2009. Mainly responsible for this are the unwavering principles to create wines that are balanced and rich in aromas and flavors and exceed expectations. Leading the way are the distinctive single vine yards and varietal strengths of the grape varieties grown:

  • Merlot
  • Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Shiraz
  • Grenache
  • Malbec
  • Cabernet Franc
  • Chardonnay
  • Pinot gris
  • Sauvignon blanc

The terroir of southern Washington

Southeastern Washington State is characterized by the Columbia River and the steppe area of the Horse Heaven Hills. The sun shines here for over 17 hours a day, and temperatures are very warm. The low rainfall requires the vines to protect themselves so as not to die. Therefore, the vines produce fewer leaves but thick-skinned berries. This makes for distinct tannins and flavors - a plus for the barren region. Drip irrigation ensures that enough moisture reaches the plants after all. This means that an exact amount of water is always supplied at the right time. Consistent quality vintage after vintage is assured, while the winemaker's craft provides the crowning touch.

Columbia Crest Winery

Experience can be bought - with Columbia Crest wine

Head winemaker and cellar master Juan Muñoz-Oca infuses his experience into every drop in the winery. For him, making wine is a new experience every time. One experiences the land, the climate, the soil. Each vineyard presents itself with unique finesse, while the differences between vintages unite past with future. Columbia Crest wines are a journey through the region and the character of an unruly place. A place from which come exceptional wines that score with varietal strengths and terroir.
