The Colheita Port of Niepoort is a long aged, expressive port wine from Sousão, Tinta Amarela, Tinta Cão, Tinta Francisca, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Francesa, Touriga Nacional and other Portuguese red grape varieties.
In the glass, this port shines in a brick-red color with chestnut brown edges. The nose reveals intense notes of candied fruits - especially plum, apricot and fig - and finely smoky hints. On the palate, the aromas of dried fruits and spicy nutty nuances are clearly noticeable. The lively acidity is perfectly integrated into the dense body and accompanies in the long, present reverberation.
Vinification of the Niepoort Colheita
A vintage tawny matured in a barrel is called Colheita, which means "harvest". Colheitas must mature at least in barrels for seven years, but at Niepoort it is tradition to let this port wine mature a few more years before it is bottled. As a result, the port wine takes on a sandy tone and its taste gets a nutty, woody note due to the slow maturation in the old wooden barrels.
After careful harvesting of the grapes by hand in the individual layers Vale do Pinhão and Ferrão, the harvested material is crushed under foot in Lagares according to the traditional method. In the cellar in Vila Nova de Gaia, the port in Pipas (550 l) is then expanded. Maturation takes place for more than 10 years.
Food recommendation for the Colheita Port wine Niepoort
Enjoy this port with liver pie, desserts such as crème brûlée and cakes with chocolate or fresh fruits. But also solo, this port is a real pleasure.
