Thewinery Codice Citra is one of the most famous cooperatives in Italy, the name Citra is due to the historical naming of the region around the provincial town of Chieti in northern Abruzzo.

The ultra-modern central winery processes the wines of 6000 hectares of vineyards, distributed among 11 local cooperatives with nearly 3000 members. founded in 1973, Codice Citra is today considered the most important wine producer in Abruzzo. 

Earth, sun and sea

The vineyards of Codice Citra extend over 6000 hectares. They are spread over the entire province of Chieti. Most of the vines grow near the Majella, the Gran Sasso and along the Adriatic coast. Citra can thus access a vast range of sites, characterized by wonderful terroir and a wide variety of microclimates. Thanks to the different winds and temperature variations, the grapes take on different aromatic characteristics. 

The native grape varieties are:

• Merlot
• Montepulciano
• Trebbiano
• Pecorino
• Passerina
• Cocociola
• Montonico

Montepulciano d'Abruzzo

The region is particularly famous for the DOC Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, this zone extends through all four provinces of Abruzzo, but mainly in Chieti. Rosso and Cerasuolo are made from Montepulciano (85 - 100%), as well as other authorized red varieties.
However, Citra is not only a winery, but also a central consulting facility. Agricultural engineers and oenologists assist the winegrowers in the planting and cultivation of the vineyards. Since the oenologist Romeo Taraborelli was recruited as plant manager, the qualities have once again been significantly improved. The Montepulciano wines are rather closed in the youth, but after a time of storage and maturation you get appropriate fullness and a beautiful harmony.
