"It's a Bordeaux. A great Bordeaux!" This is how Louis de Funès described a wine from Château Léoville Las Cases during a blind tasting in the 1976 film "Breast or Leg". Yesterday as today, the greatest wines are still produced here.
Winery Château Léovilles Las Cases - one of the greats in the Médoc
To the perfect wine
And that's no coincidence; in this winery, no less a goal has been set than the pursuit of perfection. One of the people of Château Léoville Las Cases who pursues this goal is Bruno Rolland. In this case, he is not the famous screenwriter, but the cellar master of the château. Together with his father, he represents about half a century of vinified vintages.
Next stop: Premier Cru
The 2006 Grand Vin, for example, might not only be one of the best Las Cases wines ever, but also one of the best of the 2006 vintage in the entire Médoc. The same goes for the rather weak 2007 vintage. Here, Las C ases was even able to leave the Premiers behind. Thus, Las Cases has impressively confirmed its reputation as a Super 2ème Cru, which means nothing else than that it has reached Premier Cru quality. And that is something that hardly anyone in the Médoc disputes anymore.
Winery from the best company
Léoville Las Cases has 40 hectares of the very best sites in the north. Perfect drainage of the gravel soils is provided by a small stream, which also marks the appellation boundary with Pauillac. On the opposite side of the road is the terroir of the second wine, the "Clos du Marquis", which covers a good 50 hectares. Léoville Las Cases is one of the three Léoville estates, along with Barton and Poyferré. All three are classified as 2éme Crus. However, Las Cases stands out in terms of quality compared to the other two châteaux. The division of the estate once owned by Alexandre de Gascq, Seigneur de Léoville, dates back to the 18th century. Over the centuries, the estate changed hands several times. Today it is owned by the Delon family. Michel Delon, who passed away only a few years ago, had a great influence on this exceptional estate. Today, his son Jean-Hubert Delon runs the estate with the same dedication and penchant for perfection as his father.
And these are the grape varieties grown at Château Léoville Las Cases:
- Cabernet Sauvignon
- Cabernet Franc
- Merlot
- Petit Verdot
