On the Médoc lies the Château du Moulin Rouge, an estate with Cru Bourgeois classification. Wine has been produced here for 13 generations.
Château du Moulin Rouge - for 13 generations
The beginnings of Châteaudu Moulin Rou ge date back to the 18th century. With Lucie Secret and Geoffrey Ribeiro, the 13th generation of the family is active on the estate today. While Lucie takes care of the technical and administrative aspects, Geoffrey is responsible for the estate's wines.
Site and terroir
27 hectares of vines are planted here in the Haut-Médoc. The slopes of the estate are typically gravelly, and the nearby Gironde has a moderating influence on the climate. The grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot are cultivated here.
The work in the vineyards of the estate is exclusively done manually. In 2015, the estate received the HVE3 certification for organic farming. This reflects the estate's commitment to tradition and sustainability, which is a concern of Lucie's.
The vinification
After harvesting, the grapes at Château du Moulin Rouge are sorted twice before finally being pressed and placed in thermoregulated stainless steel tanks. The vats are checked daily to find the optimal time for decanting. After fermentation, the best wines are selected, which are then put into French oak barrels to age for 12 months. During this process, one third of the wood is renewed every year.
The wines of the Château du Moulin Rouge
The Château du Moulin Rou ge offers four wines today:
- Château du Moulin Rouge
- L'Ecuyer du Moulin Rouge
- Château Beau Secret
- Château Moulin de Bayron
While the first wine reflects the full character of the estate, the second wine L'Ecuyer is more accessible and offers an uncomplicated drinking pleasure.
Château Beau Secret is Lucie's own creation, the grapes for this wine come exclusively from a vineyard in Cussac Fort Médoc. It is also the only vegan wine of the estate.
Finally, with Château Moulin de Bayron, the estate has its first Bordeaux Supérieur on offer. These wines are characterized by a desired lower yield of the vines, and thus higher quality of the grapes.
