The renowned champagne house Louis Roederer was founded in Reims in 1776 and has been family-owned ever since.
Louis Roederer - the Tsar's first choice
in 1833, Louis Roederer took over the family business from his uncle Nicolas Schreider and gave it his name. Since then, thanks to the family's involvement and good connections with commercial travelers, sales of Roederer champagnes grew to a tenth of total Champagne production by 1872. The main customer at that time, besides the United States of America, was the Russian Tsarist Empire. Tsar Nicolaus II, himself a great lover of the champagnes of the House of Roederer, ordered a special vintage in Reims and sent his court cellarer especially to support the producers of the sparkling wine. The product of this collaboration was the world-famous and still highly popular Cristal champagne.
Success is the sum of right decisions
While other Champagne producers have their grapes supplied by contract winemakers, Louis Roederer decided to pursue a different strategy by purchasing more vineyards around Reims. Frédéric Rouzaud, the current leader of the House of Roederer, continued this tradition, bringing 214 hectares of vines into family ownership. Despite the high production figures of the Champagne House Louis Roederer, due to the high production standards, they never meet the huge demand for their noble products.
The grape varieties
The champagne house Louis Roederer uses the classic grape varieties for its excellent champagnes:
Chardonnay
Pinot Meunier
Pinot Noir
