The Casa Gheller winery is located in Valdobbiadene, the home of Prosecco. Like no other, this municipality north of the city of Treviso stands for the Italian sparkling wine, whose grapes ripen on the surrounding hills.
Casa Gheller - A name for Prosecco
Casa Gheller got its name from a long-established family of winemakers who once produced sparkling wine in Valdobbiadene and owned a name for their high-quality product. Today Casa Gheller is part of the Villa Sandi group. The Moretti Polegato family , owners of Villa Sandi, have decided to keep the prestigious name to continue the history of the Ghellers.
The municipality of Valdobbiadene is located on the Piave River, about 30 km northwest of the Prosecco city of Treviso. Together with the municipality of Asolo to the southwest and Conegliano to the east, Valdobbiadene forms the region where Prosecco with DOCG appellation is produced, compared to its "simpler" brother with DOC appellation, which may come from a wider catchment area.
The terroir of Valdobbiadene
The region is characterized by the many hills on whose slopes the Glera grape finds ideal conditions to ripen optimally. The soils around Valdobbiadene are characterized by limestone and shell limestone and are very permeable to water. Steady winds and sufficient rainfall give the vines the necessary compensation for the high temperatures, especially in August and September.
Grapes and wines
Casa Gheller now produces a variety of sparkling wine specialties, which has expanded the grape varieties grown beyond Prosecco:
Glera
Pinot Grigio
Garganega
Pinot Noir
Merlot
Nine sparkling wines are produced in total by Casa Gheller, besides Prosecco as sparkling or semi-sparkling wine (Prosecco Spumante and Frizzante) also a rosé sparkling wine, a sweet sparkling wine (Dolce Spumante), as well as a vintage Prosecco or one from the top Cartizze vineyard in Valdobbiadene.
