The winery Cantina Mesa is an impressive and hypermodern building on the hills of Porto Pino.
Jund and modern from Sardinia - the Cantina Mesa winery
Between bright skies and blue sea, it now covers about 70 hectares of vineyards and is considered one of the few top producers on the island of Sardinia. It is a rather young winery, which was only officially founded in 2004. The first wines came on the market in the spring of 2006. The young ambitious winemaker Emanuele Procina was the one who came up with the idea of establishing a winery here with the claim of high quality from local varieties. In order to realize the project, he brought on board three companions, Giuseppe Mele, Daniele Pintus and Gavino Sanna. Gavino is known in the international advertising industry as one of the top creative minds and not only influenced the look of the building, but also designed the idiosyncratic, pleasantly understated label on the bottles. He is also a very ambitious guy. This can easily be gleaned from his wine philosophy:
"Each glass of our wines should tell the story of the island and its inhabitants, reflecting the smell of the sea, the freshness of the sea breezes and the heat of the sun over the vineyards"
Piero Cella and Stefano Cova at Cantina Mesa
To make this happen, the founders of Cantina Mesa brought in renowned oenologist Piero Cella to join the team. Today, Gavino Sanna is the sole owner. In the cellar, the young Stefano Cova is now proving what great potential can be extracted from the grapes.
And what does the must produce?
The vineyards are mainly planted with Carignano del Sulcis, Vermentino di Sardegna and Cannonau di Sardegna. From these grapes, Cantina Mesa has produced some outstanding wines. The Primo line represents decent everyday wines in all colors and the other wines also offer an excellent price-taste ratio. The stars of the company are the red wines Malombra, Moro Rosso, Buio Buio and the white Opale Barricato made from Vermentino.
