in 1944, Cooperativa Vinícola San Valero was founded in the Aragón region. It was the first winery in the region and the second in Spain to introduce industrial bottling.
Bodegas San Valero - Together for the good
Currently, about 500 winegrowers belong to Bodegas San Valero which together cultivate an area of about 4000 hectares. Since 1983, the cooperative has been monitoring each and every grape harvest under defined quality criteria in order to meet the high standards it has set itself. Besides reducing the use of pesticides, this system allows to improve the conservation of the environment and increase the final quality of all wines.
A rocky road to the finished wine - San Valero
Monte Ducay is a very unique, exclusive terroir in the Cariñena wine region. After a process of disentanglement, it was publicly owned before becoming privately owned and sold in parcels. All that remains of this landowner is his family name (Ducay).
The soil
It consists of very deep, stony soil, which gives it its personality. The stones have a double function: they allow water to reach the lower layers of the earth instead of accumulating on the surface, which brings the risk of disease, and at the same time the stones store the sun's heat and release it at night, creating a microclimate specific to the region.
The vines
The fruit on the vines in this area ripens less than in other places, and the grapes are smaller. This means that there is a higher concentration with less water, which is later transferred to the wines. These have very intense aromas and an increased level of what in the wine industry is called "expressiveness". in 1969, Bodegas San Valero created its Monte Ducay range to market its best wines. Later, other wines typical of the terroir were added to the selection.
The grape varieties
Bodegas San Valero cultivates, among others:
- Cabernet Sauvignon
- Garnacha
- Tempranillo
