Bodega Piedra Negra and the excellent Argentine wines produced here are well known among wine lovers. However, the history of Bodega Lurton and that of Bodega Piedra Negra is still relatively young.
Jacques and Francois Lurton in the Valle de Uco
Since 1992, the brothers Jacques and Francois Lurton have been involved in viticulture in the South American country that already made Tommy Jaud the land of his unfulfilled desires. The Lurton brothers, on the other hand, have made their dreams come true by founding Bodega Piedra Negra, which they did in 1996 in Valle de Uco.
At that time, about 15 years ago, the Mendozas were not a wine-growing region. Fascinating high altitudes, barren soils, but also rich groundwater resources characterize the face of this region. The climate is extreme. In the Mendozas, where the sun shines 300 days a year, temperature differences of 30 degrees within 24 hours are not uncommon.
Piedra Negra Winery - Pioneering spirit that pays off
In Vista Flores, at an altitude of 1000 meters, Jacques and François Lurton acquired their first parcel of land, which was to be the beginning of Bodega Piedra Negra. The land here had the harsh character of a desert. Pyroclastic sands, gravels and pebbles were the predominant deposits on the ground in a high valley of the Valle de Uco.
Before the two brothers, no one had ever tried to grow wine here. Today, the original parcel has evolved into an impressive land holding of 250 hectares, a large part of which, around 200 hectares, is used to grow vines.
Grape varieties at Piedra Negra
Besides classics like
Malbec
Cabernet Sauvignon
Cabernet Franc
white varieties such as Pinot Gris, Tocai Friulano, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier are also cultivated. Francois Lurton is a strong believer in organic viticulture, so it is not surprising that Bodega Piedra Negra is certified for organic farming.
